News and reports from Broad Oak Trout Lakes December 2015

Well the festive season is upon us! The weather has finally become seasonal and we are in wellies and woollies. We know where we are! We remain open as usual over the Festivities with the exception of Christmas Day. There will be a selection of festive tipples available to warm your tea! We will be open New Years’ Day, though don’t come too early!

The Members Competition and Social is on Monday the 28th December. Invites will be with members soon, via whichever preferred method of contact you requested.

Membership for 2016 is now available to renew. We have a few early takers, and it seems to be a popular idea as a Christmas present. The cost remains the same as this year, at £35. The benefits are; reduced ticket prices and free tea and coffee, plus members’ only events (such as the Christmas competition). One visit per month on a 2 fish ticket, with one cup of tea or coffee will save £3 per visit/£36 per year.

If you are being asked what you might like for Christmas, don’t forget the tackle shop here. We do vouchers for the shop, so you can decide exactly what you’d like later on.

Fly of the Month

The ‘damsel’ was a clear favourite of both fishermen and fish in November. The majority were gold headed and either green or black, though the catch record shows some colour variation from orange to white with sparkles. The buzzer, again of varying hues, was a good second. One particular day showing that pink buzzers were the only successful fly of the day!

Thank you to John Clements, a neighbour, for this wonderful photo, taken from a hot air balloon earlier this year. What a wonderful view of Broad Oak.

Catch of the Month – November

The biggest catch of the month goes to Howard Parker, who tempted out a fabulous 3lb 8oz rainbow on a blue flash damsel. Well done Howard. Gordon Walters came close second with his 3lb 4oz trout, also caught on a damsel. Our own 007, Steve-the-fish Peck had the only recorded brown trout: A 2lb beauty taken on a red buzzer. No tiger trout have been noted, and the Golden One still lurks in the deeps. Last seen it had paired up with a big brownie! Maybe it has learned the wily ways of the browns. It will need some tempting. The pot for the Golden Trout stands at £29 so far. The rules around this are that the catch must be witnessed or photographed and then returned. The pot will then build up again.

Weather Forecast (taken from Met Office website)

Fortune will shine down upon us over December – we will not be frozen! The weather will be changeable; with rain, breeze (no mention of gales – that is a positive!) and cloud, interspersed with high pressure which will bring cooler brighter more settled spells, but not for long enough to make the water hard! That sounds about right then. Come appropriately suited and booted. The fire will be burning for a warm, and the kettle at the ready.

Events

The next South West Fishing for Life (Glouc/Worcs) event at Broad Oak is Sunday 13th December for a fly-tying demo and try. All bookings for this are through Roger on .
