First . . . you are not alone. There is a great fellowship in scouting willing to provide your every need. There are leaders and volunteers that have been there, done that, and are more than willing to share their experience. In addition to your Unit, you are a member of the Salt River District. Our District has a number of volunteers providing training, activities, and guidance for all the District’s units and unit leaders. You are also a member of the Grand Canyon Council. The Council provides us with a District Executive dedicated to our needs as well as many other professional well versed in all things Scouting.

Second . . . resources and more resources. From Program Source books providing meeting by meeting directions to the hundreds of internet sites full of scouting experience, there is everything you could possibly need at you finger tips.

Finally . . . there is nothing more rewarding than being a Scout volunteer. Virtually hundreds of unique experiences wait for you and your family. You will make lots of new friends and contacts. And you will have a positive impact on the lives of ours and our next generation.

You are now a member of our Scouting Family. Welcome. Its great to meet you. We are looking forward to working together for our children, our families, and our community.

Yours in Scouting,

Fast Start Training
Fast Start training is the first step for a new volunteer and taken immediately after a new leader registers and before they meet with any youth member.
This Is ScoutingThis is for all unit-level leaders. It covers the basics of scouting with an overview of the scouting program, its organizational structure, and how the program interacts and serves the youth at each age level.
Leader-Specific TrainingThese training courses include leader specific training for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing leaders and an introduction to outdoor leader skills for Webelos and Boy Scout.
Youth ProtectionThis course is highly recommended as working with youth comes with new responsibilities. You should know what they are, before you start working with your unit.

What’s the Next Step

These steps are in no particular order, but getting to them will put you well on your way to feeling comfortable, informed, and ready for the fun and satisfaction of being a scout leader.

  1. Take the On-Line fast Start on the Council Website (under Training)
  1. Visit the Council Scout Shop (or the Mesa store).
  2. Pick up the Scout book for your level
  3. For Cubs pick up the Program helps, for Boy Scouts pick up the Troop Program Features (any volume will be useful)
  4. Buy a uniform and necessary patches
  5. Take a look at all the items available to help you be successful. Don’t buy yet as your unit may have a library of these items or other leaders will share their copies.
  1. Contact your Committee Chair or another Scout Leader in your unit and get:
  2. The Unit Calendar
  3. A Unit Phone list
  4. All information from the last Committee meeting
  1. Ask another leader to borrow their last Scouting Magazine. It will have the latest Scout Leader Helps for the month, a menu for things to do at den meetings, troop meetings etc. Read it cover to cover. Even the Ads, there is a lot of help and stuff in there!
  1. Sign up for Training. You can’t be too trained. It will take you from doing it the hard way to doing it the easy way.
  1. Go to Roundtable! The best two hours you will spend all month. Up to date information as well as lots of people who have been there, done that, and are loving it!
  1. Hit the Internet.
  1. Enjoy yourself. Leading is not work. It’s a journey; it’s an experience, its what you make of it.
