If you require a Doctor out of hours call 111

Out of Hours Service
NHS 111 is a new telephone service for people in Yorkshire and the Humber to call if they need urgent medical attention but are not in a life-threatening situation.

The easy-to-remember, free-to-call number is being introduced across England to help reduce the pressure on A&E departments and the 999 service.

Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the service is for people who aren’t sure if they need to go to A&E, don’t have a GP to call or generally need reassurance and advice.

On dialling 111 a team of fully-trained advisors and experienced nurses will assess your condition and direct you to the local service that can help you best, when you need it.

If you have a life threatening emergency dial 999

Riverside Surgery has an elected pharmacy that dispenses our patient’s medications for us on our behalf. The pharmacy is located within the Riverside Surgery premises but is not a part of the surgery organisation. The pharmacy is run by a company called Damian Limited. Damian Limited also have a branch pharmacy which operates from the Broughton Surgery premises.

Outside surgery hours there is an answering machine service to take your requests. When requesting a repeat prescription please be ready to quote your name, address, (PIN) personal identification number (which can be found on the right hand side of your prescription) and which medication you require. 24 hours’ notice is needed to prepare repeat prescriptions. Sometimes you may be asked to come in and see the doctor for review of your repeat prescriptions. Prescriptions will be posted to you if you provide a stamped addressed envelope.
Patients on regular medication do not always need to see a doctor. If your doctor agrees, you may obtain a repeat prescription from the Prescription Clerk. This may be done by telephoning (01652) 653131. Alternatively, use the form on the website to submit your repeat prescription request.

What to Do If You Require Medication Urgently

We recognise that there are times when you may unexpectedly run out of or lose your medication, or for some other reason need medication urgently.

In these cases you should telephone the surgery or call in to speak to us. You should explain what medication you need and why. We will then ensure that you can get your urgent medication or a prescription the same working day.

If you run out of medication and require it urgently out of normal surgery hours you can telephone NHS 111. Remember this is for urgent situations only. The staff will put you in touch with the out of hours staff who will arrange for you to collect a small supply of your urgent medication from a suitable place such as a pharmacy. You can also go to a pharmacy yourself with details of your repeat prescriptions or empty containers/boxes (They must have dispensing label on them), and ask them to supply up to 72 hours of your repeat medication.

You may also contact NHS 111 by dialling 111 who will give you information on local health care services including pharmacy opening hours

PLEASE NOTE: Email is NOT a secure method of communication, if you are not happy about sending confidential information by email please do not use this service.

Please return or destroy unused medicines, keep medicines out of the reach of children.

Registering with Riverside Surgery:

If you reside within our practice boundaries (defined in the sketch map below) please bring your medical card to Riverside Surgery, Brigg or to our Branch Surgery in Broughton and request to register at reception. If you have lost or misplaced your medical card we can complete an alternative short, confidential questionnaire. Please make sure you have details of your last doctor and your NHS number where possible. Your registration will be followed up with a simple health check with a practice nurse at a convenient time.

Registration Process:

Attend reception and complete:

  • GMS1 registration form
  • Patient health questionnaire
  • Book an appointment with a nurse for a health check

Your registration form will then be passed to our practice administrator

  • Who will create a medical record for you on our clinical system
  • This will send a link to the health authority who will request your paper medical notes from your previous surgery (patient notes can take up a few weeks to arrive)

Attend your appointment with the nurse for a health check

  • If you are taking any repeat medication the nurse will collect the details from you and will forward these onto the Doctor who will put your medication on repeat prescription
  • The Doctor will arrange an appointment for you if they think a medication review is required
  • Please advise the nurse if you would like to collect your medication from the surgeries elected pharmacy or a pharmacy of your own choice

When your paper notes are received by the surgery your notes will be summarised and your electronic record updated with the necessary details from your paper notes

How to make an Appointment with a Doctor or Nurse:

Riverside Surgery operates a mixed appointment system with same day and pre-bookable appointments.

  • Telephone the surgery on the day you need an appointment. The receptionist will ask you a number of questions to assist in signposting your call to the most appropriate healthcare professional
  • An appointment will be offered wherever possible with your choice of Doctor
  • You may consult any of the Doctors within the practice
  • Please book a separate appointment for each person attending
  • Double appointments are not available to book. It is at the Doctors discretion during an appointment to decide whether a longer consultation is required
  • If you cannot keep your appointment, please let us know
  • On days where demand for appointments is very heavy, you may be put on the Triage Nurse’s patient list and receive a call back
  • Appointments can be booked up to a week in advance by those patients with circumstances where making a same day or next day appointment is inappropriate. Pre-bookable appointments are limited
  • Pre bookable appointments are available on a Tuesday and Thursday evening and a Saturday morning (these appointments are pre bookable only)

* Please be advised that the surgery telephones are on answer phone during extended hours sessions, so you will not be able to call and cancel an appointment on a Tuesday and Thursday evening after 6.30pm or on a Saturday morning

*A Saturday morning surgery is not an emergency surgery and unless you have a pre booked appointment the receptionist will be unable to offer you an appointment that morning.

How to Make an Appointment witha Nurse
Our nursing sisters are running a variety of clinics throughout the day for the promotion of good health and disease management. They will also help you with - immunisations, cervical smears, ear syringing, travel vaccination advice clinics, other referrals arranged by your doctor and also telephone advice sessions. You may book nurse appointments in advance.
Triage - Telephone (01652) 650131
We have specially trained triage nurses who deal with requests for home visits, emergencies and ensure the most appropriate clinician sees a patient, as well as offering advice on a variety of conditions such as urinary tract infections, emergency contraception, head lice, use of Paracetemol and inhalers. This service operates Monday to Friday 08:00 to 18:30. Please call our reception and ask to speak to the triage nurse for advice.

Home Visits - Telephone (01652) 650131
If you are too ill to attend the surgery please try to telephone before 10:30 am to enable the Doctor to plan his rounds. Please attend the surgery whenever possible. The Triage Nurse handles all requests for home visits.

Speaking to the Doctors
If you want to speak to your doctor on the telephone it will normally be possible to do this by arrangement with the receptionist. It would be helpful in judging the urgency of the call and also ensuring the doctor has your notes and relevant information available if you could tell the receptionist the nature of your call when you ring.

At other times we may be busy and we find that interruptions during surgery are upsetting both to ourselves and to patients we are seeing. For this reason we have asked receptionists not to disturb consultations with non-urgent telephone calls.

A more convenient time for you to ring will be suggested. Please remember our Triage Nurse may be able to help you.

General Practitioner Training Scheme

In addition to the partners and salaried GPs, there is usually at least one GP Registrar working in the practice. This Doctor is fully qualified, has worked in hospitals and is gaining experience in family medicine under supervision before taking up an appointment in general practice. As part of the GP Registrars training, patients may be asked to consent to having their consultation recorded on video. We respect patient’s wishes and consent can be withheld.
