An important part of growing up is experiencing a variety of academic, athletic and arts activities throughout the sensitive periods of a child’s life. Montessori School of Louisville aims to provide a well-balanced After School Clubs program for children Early Childhood through Middle School, always taking into consideration the skills being taught in each club and the developmental needs of our children.

Montessori School of Louisville is honored to provide for its students the opportunity to “stretch and grow” in the following After-School Club programs. Please note that there is a nominal fee attached to each After-School Club. After-School Clubs are not a part of the Extended Care Program and are run separately. In hopes of giving back more family time to your loved ones, please enjoy and support our After-School Club Program.

MONDAY

Piano Lessons

Ms. Emily McCarthy is a Louisville native who has recently graduated from the University of Louisville with her Master’s degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. Ms. Emily has been playing piano since the age of three and is proof that it is possible for children to learn to play the piano at an early age. Since graduation, Ms. Emily has enjoyed teaching piano to a wide variety of ages, from young children to adults. Her philosophy is that piano lessons can be educational and fun! Chess Club 2015-2016 (Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle School)

We are pleased to inform you that MSL will once again offer chess classes with Chess Master Emir Sefo for students Kindergarten and older this school year. Mr. Emir is an experienced teacher and coach who makes learning to play chess FUN!

Chess Competitions: Mr. Emir will share with all Elementary Chess Club participants information regarding upcoming area and regional level competitions. Historically, MSL students have achieved high results in both area and regional level competitions. Parents are expected to accompany children to tournaments or make arrangements with other parents to chaperone. Tournaments are typically commitments of a few Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. A minimum attendance of 3 chess tournaments is encouraged, but not required by Elementary Chess participants.

Dates:Monday - 24 weeks, September 14, 2015 – April 25, 2016

Time: Beginning Level/Kindergarteners 2:15 - 2:45 p.m.

Intermediate Level/Elementary and Middle School 2:45 - 3:45 p.m.

Fees:$70 for Casa Chess Club

$90 for Elementary/Middle School Chess Club

Chess Club fees do not include tournament fees, which are approximately $20 per tournament.

TUESDAY

Flute Lessons

Dr. Tony Watson is an experienced and versatile musician and teacher with more than 30 years of studio flute teaching. Dr. Tony also has eight years of experience in public school music teaching, as well as experience in teaching Kindermusik and Musikgarten classes. He has completed extensive teacher training at the East Tennessee Suzuki Flute Institute. In addition to teaching music classes from Toddler through Grade 3 at Montessori School of Louisville this year, Dr. Tony will again offer private flute lessons. Strings Lessons

Laura De St. Croix has just moved to the Louisville area from Minneapolis. An accomplished performer and teacher, Laura began her study of the viola at the age of ten. She holds a Bachelor of Music in viola performance from Texas Tech University and a Masters of Music in viola performance from the University of Minnesota. She is currently working to complete her Doctorate of Musical Arts, also from the University of Minnesota. Laura has been teaching viola and violin privately since 2006 and customizes her teaching to each individual student, focusing on musicality and tone, while teaching technique through repertoire. Music Makers Club – (Early Childhood)

Music Makers is an active music experience including singing, moving to music and playing instruments. The repertoire includes a wide variety of traditional rhymes and chants, as well as songs and recorded music drawn from folk, popular, classical and jazz styles.

Mad Science – (Elementary and Middle School)

Mad Science has created a vast library of after-school programs for children of all ages. Engaging demonstrations, hands-on activities and real world discussions make learning science fun and exciting for students! In each class, students will actively participate in experiments they are able to take home to show Mom and Dad! The focuses for Elementary and Middle School this term will be Magnets and Electricity.

Stage One Drama Club – (Early Childhood)

Stage One Family Theatre’s professional artist/educators provide active ways to encourage imaginative thinking, effective communication and positive collaboration. Students learn to dramatically use their voices, bodies and imaginations to gain a better understanding of themselves and the world around them. Together students will explore the fundamentals and fun of drama, using silly stories as a foundation.

Early Childhood Drama Club will be facilitated by Ashley Smith, Stage One’s newest Education associate. Ashley received her Masters of Fine Arts in Performance from the University of Louisville. While studying at University of Louisville, she traveled to Arezzo, Italy to study the physical storytelling techniques of Dario Fo at the Accadamia dell’Arte. Before entering graduate school, she toured the Central New York area as an Actor/Educator with Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. In addition to her work with Stage One, she can be found teaching as an adjunct professor at Indiana University Southeast and as an aerial instructor at Suspend, a local aerial arts and cirque fitness studio.

Scripps Spelling Bee Club – (Ages 7 through Middle School)

When you are reading, are you soaking in all the new words? If so, then you will not want to miss out on the Spelling Bee Club at MSL! This club will challenge you to take leaps ahead in developing your spelling skills, while preparing you to compete in MSL and area Spelling Bee competitions.

Spelling Bee Club participants will work on Spelling Bee rules and format, as well as receive levelled spelling word lists. The MSL school spelling bee is scheduled for February 10th at 1:45 p.m. in the Magnolia classroom. MSL’s spelling bee winner will advance to compete in the local spelling bee. Join in the excitement and improve your spelling skills!

Guitar and Ukulele Lessons

Evan Blum’s interest in music began with piano lessons when he was eight years old. Since then, his experience in performance has included high school and university choir and playing guitar in his own band, “The Murals”. Evan graduated in 2011 from the University of Louisville with a degree in Music in Multi-Cultural Context. Besides teaching guitar and ukulele, Evan composes and arranges music for a variety of instruments. Evan enjoys sharing his knowledge and love of music with others through both playing and teaching. Mad Science – (Early Childhood)

Mad Science has created a vast library of after-school programs. Its engaging demonstrations, hands-on activities and real world discussions make learning science fun for students! The focuses for Early Childhood this term will be Botany and Insects. Explore the world of flora and fauna, as we examine the world of plants, then take a close look at our six-legged animal friends, their habits and function in the world. Finally, explore the interdependencies of plants and insects in nature.

Chef Mat’s Cooking Club – (Elementary and Middle School)

In Chef Mat’s Cooking Club, students will learn nutritional information, cooking techniques, culinary terms and how to use a variety of cooking utensils, while gaining hands-on cooking experience. And best of all, students will get to eat what they cook!

Mat Shalenko is a health coach and professional chef. He teaches cooking classes at Cooking at the Cottage and works with families, youth and seniors in the Portland and Shawnee areas of Louisville. Mat also instructs students at the University of Louisville, Jackson and Clay County High Schools in Eastern Kentucky and personally coaches private clients. He received his health coach training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where he was trained in hundreds of dietary theories and studied a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods. He trained in culinary arts at Sullivan University and has been a professional chef for more than fifteen years.

MSL Swim Club at the Northeast YMCA-(Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle School)

Montessori School of Louisville is pleased once again to work with the Northeast YMCA and Adam Johnson to offer MSL Swim Club. Adam has worked in aquatics for over 17 years and is currently employed as Senior Aquatics Director at the Northeast YMCA.

Students enrolled in Swim Club will be assessed during the first swim lesson and grouped with peers who have similar skills and experience. Ratios for Swim Club instruction will be 1 teacher for 4-5 students. Swim lessons will consist of 40 minutes of instruction followed by 20 minutes of free swim fun. Please join us in providing your child with a fun experience and the gift of a potential life-saving skill!

Dates: Friday – 6 weeks: January 15, 22, February 5, 19, 26 and March 4
