UNIT OVERVIEW: This unit will focus on the chronological study of literature during the Anglo-Saxon and Middle Ages periods. Key selections to be studied will include: Beowulf, Anglo-Saxon poetry, The Canterbury Tales, Middle Ages ballads, the Arthurian Legend (including: Sir Gawain & the Green Knight, Le Morted’Arthur and the film, First Knight) and Everyman.

UNIT OVERVIEW: This unit will focus on the communication process, as well as developing (speech types, topic selection, research) and writing (speech structure & format, outlining) of the speech. Students will deliver a speech of introduction and a multi-media speech as part of this unit.

UNIT OVERVIEW: This unit will explore the history of American football (with an emphasis on professional football) as well as some of the significant figures and events in the development of the sport. Students will read a variety of literary selections relating to football, will complete mini-research project about the Pro Football Hall of Fame and will explore a time period in the history of the sport and report their findings in a Power Point presentation.

UNIT OVERVIEW: This unit will build on the skills learned from the last unit and will move into the areas of building (introduction & conclusion writing, transitions and sentence structure) and writing (using language effectively) the speech. Students will view and critique a number of sample speeches. A persuasive speech and a speech to entertain are required during this unit. Additionally, students will deliver at least one impromptu speech.

UNIT OVERVIEW: This unit will explore one of the three required novels for Language Arts 12B. While reading the novel, our study will focus on: author’s writing style, satire, foreshadowing, plot development, conflict, theme analysis, and application of the novel’s theme and/or messages to our society today. Assessment will consist of three reading quizzes followed by a comprehensive test at the end of the unit. Students who earn a 90% or higher on the three quizzes will be exempt from the final test.

UNIT OVERVIEW: This unit will take an in-depth look at the Six Traits of Effective Writing. Before the unit begins, students will write a 1.5-2 page argumentative paper (movie review). As we explore each of these traits, students will revise their original papers (a total of six revisions) and submit a final copy at the conclusion of our study. By doing so, students will not only learn the traits, but will also see the value in careful, thoughtful revision and editing.

UNIT OVERVIEW: This unit will explore the novel, Shoeless Joe. In reading and studying the novel, we will focus on character development, conflict, plot development and foreshadowing. To aid their reading, students will complete a study guide as we progress through the unit. Periodic reading check quizzes will be given, as will a final, comprehensive test at the conclusion of the novel. Teacher-initiated discussion will be at the center of our progress through this novel. At the end of the novel, the class will watch the film, Field of Dreams, and write a detailed essay comparing the film to the novel.
