Maintenance-free heavy-duty pivot bushing

At the Hanover Trade Show, polymer researcher and bearings specialist igus GmbH presented a new heavy-duty plain bearing. The lubricant and maintenance-free plastic plain bearing “iglidur Q2” pushes the limits of injection-moulded bearings for heavy-duty pivoting movements even further, according to the Cologne-based company. This is due to a completely new material mix that igus processes into low-price polymer bearings with the aid of injection moulding technology . “iglidur” plain bearings have already replaced millions of metal bushings or coating metal bearings that require oiling or greasing.

Increase in wear-resistance by a factor of 2 to 5

Initial tests in the company’s own Technical Centre have proved that, depending on the shaft material, “iglidur Q2” performs between 2 and 5 times better than all the other 35 standard catalogue materials manufactured by the company when required to carry out a pivoting movement under a radial load of 76 MPa. What makes the iglidur Q2 ideally suited for the superior service life for heavy-duty pivot is the combination of high wear-resistance (wear = abrasion) and low deformation.

igus was the first company worldwide to offer service life calculation for plain bearings on the internet, based on the results of more than 25 years of research and application tests under industrial conditions. In the new “Polymer plain bearings 2011” catalogue that has just been published, the company offers 10,200 tribologically optimised products ex stock.
