Guidelines

BALANCE BEAM2/07/02

Walking from either direction, one person at a time.

Use yellow support poles to assist in getting up and down.

The balance beam does tilt from side to side.

Feet only on the beam.

Walk, don’t run.

BOUNCING UNIT

Use hand rails at all times.

Feet must remain in contact with the black foot pad if standing, at all times.

One person allowed on at a time.

Sitting on the black pad is allowed, as long as when bouncing the child is not being bounced up and off the unit in an unsafe manner.

Allow unit to stop before climbing down; no jumping off or on.

MONKEY BARS

Begin from either the flat platform at one end or from the climbing ladder at the other end.

One person and one direction at a time.

Hands only of the triangular shaped bars.

Grip each bar; do not skip bars.

PLATFORM

Use the stairs and hand rails, or the blue stepping stones, or Jack’s Bean Stalk (see directions for use below) to climb up or down the platform.

SLIDES

The only way to use the slide is from the top going down, seated and feet first.

Be sure both feet touch the ground before getting off the slide.

No lying down on stomach or back.

No head first.

No running or climbing up the slide from the bottom.

With two slides, side by side, no hand holding with another student going down.

JACK’S BEAN STALK (CLIMBING POLE)

Children may climb down from the platform or they may climb up from the ground to the platform.

Place one foot on each step and use both hands on the pole while climbing.

ROCK CLIMBING RAMP

Use both hands on chain to aid in climbing. Hand-over -hand motion on the chain going up, or hand -under-hand motion going down.

One foot on each of the green foot pads.

Children are to lean forward and not backward while climbing.

Keep arms close to the body while using the chain to climb.

Only one person climbing at a time.

No more than two children should be at the top platform at one time.

ANGLED CLIMBING BARS & STEPS

Feet are only permitted to go in the angled, U shaped bars. No where else.

Place both feet in each “U” shaped bar before moving feet up or down.

Do not cross feet over each other while climbing.

Use the smaller bar for hand placement.

Do not cross hands over each other while climbing.

Climbers may start from the ground and go up to the platform, or start at the top platform and climb down to the ground.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

No sitting on the equipment.

No hanging upside down (feet higher than head) at any time is permitted.

Adult supervisors are responsible for the safety and well being of their class or group, regardless of what a child may say or think is appropriate play on the equipment.

Adult supervisors have the right to ask any child, who is acting in any manner that could endanger themself or others, to get off a piece of equipment or to leave the playground area.

Adult supervisors need to watch for unsafe equipment or surroundings, remove the children and immediately report such to the school administration.

Adult supervisors shall immediately report all accidents to the school administration.

In the event of inclement weather, wet or slippery equipment, the playground shall be closed until safer play conditions exist.

Adult supervisors shall remain in close proximity to the playground equipment and visually supervise whenever a child is playing there.

Children who wear shoes with slick soles, big heels, or shoes that lack good ankle support should not be on any surface that could pose a danger for slippage, falls or accidents. Rubber soled shoes, such as sneakers, provide a safer footing.

Common sense should be exercised by all persons using or supervising the playground equipment.
