Grand Knights Message

Last September 22nd, 2015, I watched on television as Pope Francis landed at Andrews Air Force Base just outside of Wasshington D.C. for his first visit to the United States. As the Pope deplaned and was greeted by all the dignitaries, including the President and his family and many of the high officials of the Catholic Church in this country, I was in awe and struck by what the local media and the Pope’s groups travelling with him continually brought up and discussed about the Pope and what they felt were his major issues and concerns in the world. I wish I would have counted, but I can tell you the word charity or charitable was mentioned many times. The indication was that Pope Francis is high on and has a strong belief for the needs of more worldwide acts of charity for the poor, those in need and the neglected people of the world.
There is an old saying, “charity begins at home”. That may be true, but I believe we all can and should be more outgoing and involved with acts of charity by following the four principles of our order. There is good reason why charity is listed as the first one of our four principles. Our council has a long and strong record and history of charitable acts of giving. Our part as current members of Council 2506 is to keep our charitable acts continuing as we move forward.
The acts of being charitable toward others may at times be difficult and even stressful. But, if we treat others the way we would like to be treated it makes charitable acts much easier. Every person in the world is different. Each has their own thoughts and perceptions of issues and concerns. We all maybe need to step back and understand that if we truly trust God and our Faith that all situations that may arise between individuals, family and friends, different groups or organizations and even countries, that given time God will work those situations out to a solution that must be right, since God was the chairperson of the committee coming up with the answer.
We need to listen to God and through the Pope to God. In this world all lives matter. Most of us are not in a high position of authority where our actions will affect worldwide changes in how individuals, organizations and companies treat and handle people or employees. However, here at the local level is a good place to start for each of us. Our principle of Fraternity should play a big part in our treatment of each person we come in contact with. People who are appointed, elected, or work their way up the ladder to a position of authority deserve the respect that goes with holding that position or title. This goes from a committee chairperson to the President of the United States and includes all private, public, and religious operations.
Again there is an old saying, “You may not agree with the individual holding a certain position, but at least respect the position or the title that person holds”.
How does all this affect each of us? As Catholics and as a member of the Knights of Columbus, we have a responsibility to follow God’s Law as directed by religious and lay personnel who have been given the authority to direct and guide programs and activities at the local level of our parishes. This also holds true for our public officials in positions of leadership and authority. If all people followed the laws of the land guiding our daily lives how much better and safer would we all be?
Respect for all people regardless of race, color or creed, respect for people in authority, respect for our Catholic leaders. Sometimes it appears that we as a nation and actually the world have gone off track or been derailed. We need to pray to God to help all of us get back on track. If each of us thought more about how each person views the world and we reacted more positively to each person’s view, I believe the world would slowly but surely become a much better place.
For those who have served or are now serving in the military learned very early in basic training all about respect for authority. That is probably the one lesson that stayed with every man and woman who served their country. I believe we live in the greatest country in the world. This has come about because of our great love, understanding and respect for our nation and our leaders of this great country at all levels.
May our great charitable works of mercy bring us peace and comfort and may God bless us and keep us safe.
Gene Miller, G.K.

Council 2506 Knight Informer
During the past several months there have been discussions at our meetings regarding the cost of printing and mailing our monthly bulletin to our members.
Our cost is some over $300 per month or roughly $3,800 a year. The council officers are looking at options to reduce that cost. As your Grand Knight, I asked a group of Knights to serve on a committee to review all options and make a recommendation. This subject will be open for discussion during our next few month’s meetings and a vote will be taken during our regular May meeting to determine what the future of our Knight Informer will be.
Pro-Life Activities
Our parish's Pro-Life group prays the Rosary every 2nd Saturday of the month at 9 am. All are welcome to participate. They also place flags for the Pro-Life display at the church and attend prayer vigils at Planned Parenthood in St. Paul.
