Volunteer Role Description

Department:Short Breaks

Opportunity Leader: Gemma Airey (Activities Coordinator)

Context: This opportunity involvessupporting children and young people aged 6 to 14years who have a sibling with a learning disability. Group members do not usually have a learning disability but may have some additional needs.The group meetings on Friday at 4.30-6.30pm. The group aims to provide children and young people with a break from home, opportunities to make new friends, share knowledge and experiences and of course have fun!

Purpose of the Role: Volunteers are active participants at the group, providing support to the group members, ensuring they are able to participate in activities and that the service is responsive to their needs.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Setting up in preparation for the group and clearing away at the end of the session
  • Supporting and encouraging children and young people to participate in the sessions
  • Sharing ideas for activities
  • Following instructions from the Siblings Support Worker and Siblings Group Leader
  • All staff and volunteers share responsibility for the welfare and safeguarding of group members

Skills/Knowledge/Attitude: Volunteers need to be friendly and approachable, have plenty of energy and willing to get involved in the activities. The children have a range of support needs and volunteers will need to be adaptable and responsive to the children’s needs.

Commitment: Volunteers should be able to offer the minimum of 6 months commitment to this role.

This role requires volunteers to complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. There is no cost to the volunteer for this. Details will be given upon induction.

Travel costs and any additional expenses incurred will be reimbursed
