16. LTA approach
Learning & teaching methods including their alignment to LOs; embedding of employability/PDP/scholarship skills; assessment (formative and summative); research/ teaching linkages; supporting equality and diversity; internationalisation
Learning and Teaching Methods
Learning and Teaching Approach: The module will utilise the philosophy and principles of TESEP which adopts a blended approach to learning, teaching and assessment using an on line delivery of the theoretical content of the module via Moodle (LOs 1-5). Additionally, interactive workshops will be provided to support the application of outcomes 1-5 in practice utilising scenarios and simulated practice techniques. Support materials will be made available to candidates online and these will be combined with portfolio development and assessment support provided to the supervising mentor by a member of the mentorship module academic team.
Embedding of employability/PDP/scholarship skills
Employability : The NMC require that all students are supported and assessed in practice by a registered mentor. This blended learning programme will allow Registered Nurses and Midwives to place their name on the local area register of mentors achieving the NMC requirements to support learners in practice and addtionally will facilitate the Registered Nurse or Midwife to achieve a number of requirements of the NHS Knowledge and skills framework. The programme also allows NapierUniversityto fulfil its requirement of the NMC accreditation of the pre-registration nursing and midwifery programmes to provide mentorship preparation.
Assessment Approach (formative and summative)
Learning outcomes 1-5 will be assessed by the production of a structured portfolio of evidence of application of mentorship theory in the candidate’s practice setting. This portfolio will contain evidence of the achievement of the NMC standards for mentors. This will be assessed in the work based setting by sign off mentors using an identified module assessment criteria, and quality assured by university lecturers.
Research/teaching linkages
The content of this programme will be underpinned by the evidence base underpinning current practice in mentorship, teaching and learning as identified by the NMC (2008) and NES(2006). The structure of the programme also reflects the NMC (2008) and the NES (2006)core curriculum framework for the preparation of mentors.
Supporting equality and diversity
All Registered Nurses and Midwives who meet the NMC criteria will be eligible to undertake this programme. Other health professionals who undertake a mentorship role will also have an opportunity to undertake this programme.
Internationalisation
Although this programme will be delivered as part of the national approach to mentor preparation within Scotland, as the theoretical components are delivered via Moodle combined with face to face elements delivered locally in practice, it could potentially be delivered on an international basis.
For the purpose of the University Regulations, this is a SNMSC practice module.
