Volunteer Activities 2016/2017

Role / Duties/Responsibilities
Grounds and Facility Preparation and Hibernation crew / School start-up crew and school take-down crew (set up/take down the classroom camp and yurt in preparation for the year/summer break; brush, tarps, ground, equipment). Must be available in late August, and again in late June/early July.
As directed by educators
Indoor Facility cleaning crew / Monthly crew to clean the yurt, (sanitize, scrub, organize, remove junk and garbage from the site). As directed by educators
Port a Potty manager / Assessment of requirements (per ToL agreement, knock over protection, aesthetics) Includes maintenance of structure once built. Deals with rental of portapotty contract, renewal or revisions or acquires a sponsor for rental. Ensures facility is securable and manages access. Upgrades facility as required by educators (e.g. stools, stairs etc)
Grounds Maintenance / Manage grounds such as roads and pathways upkeep, remove junk, replace/adjust tarping and general maintenance of the outdoor aspects of base classroom and equipment in consultation with educators and Township of Langley.
Indoor Facility Development and structural maintenance / Assessment of requirements (per ToL agreement, Yurtz by Design suggestion, blow over and theft protection, aesthetics) for development of external additions (mudroom, deck, stairs, ramps etc). Develops plans in conjunction with educators. Leads build crew, organizes build or development including crew and supplies; within set budget. Includes maintenance of structure once built. Ensures facility is securable and manages access. Upgrades facility as required by educators, including ongoing upkeep and maintenance of yurt structure as a whole.
Orientation Days (Mock Days) / Monitor potential registrants or new students; organization and communication of orientation days in collaboration with educators. Welcomes participants. Requires availability before and during events in May/June and possibly other dates.
School Development committee / Reviews activities, direction, policies etc. of other outdoor schools and examines these in relation to LFS. Examines the public outdoor school system and evaluates against current LFS practices; compares and determines public versus independent or public and independent options. Examines and integrates environmental stewardship practices in LFS curriculum delivery. Explores collaborations with other outdoor schools and/or preschools in Langley and in other communities. Manages and monitors the LFS delivery practices against other existing outdoor and environmental stewardship systems suggesting future directions of the school.
Policy Review Committee / Develops and writes new school policies and procedures in accordance with the Independent School Act, the Teachers Act, current labour practice, WSB, Ministry of Education expectations or requirements, Forest School Canada recommendations and others. Reviews and revises existing policy. Collaborates with appropriate LFS stakeholders in doing so. Requires representation form school board, school staff, parent advocacy required
Gardening Committee / In collaboration with LFS Educators develops gardens, organizes build crew including acquisition of supplies. Builds garden according to educators specifications, within specified budget and according to grant guidelines and timelines. Manages garden outside of school (such as over summer). Maintains garden structure over time. Supports educators with seed sewing, garden planting/transplanting etc.
Grants Committee / Discovers grants that the school may be eligible for (as a non-profit association, as an independent school, as an outdoor school and within those guidelines and regulations). Applies for grants, communicates grant requirements. Representation from the finance committee required. Grant writing skills an asset.
Board Positions (any) / Any board positions, assuming the duties of that position are fulfilled, President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Director of , Marketing/Advertising, Enrolment/Registration, School Development, Facilities and Grounds Maintenance, Human Resources, Fundraising, Includes elementary educator and preschool educator representative
Duties include but are not limited to;
• Regularly attends board meetings and important related meetings
• Makes commitment to chair specific area of school development and participates actively in committee work
• Volunteers for and willingly accepts assignments and completes them thoroughly and on time
• Stays informed about committee matters, prepares themselves well for meetings, and reviews and comments on minutes and reports
• Gets to know other committee members and builds a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus
• Is an active participant in the committee's annual evaluation and planning efforts
• Participates in fund raising for the organization
Mail Pick-Up / Pick up mail from Fort Langley post office at least once per week and distribute accordingly (most mail goes to President or Treasurer)
School phone / Answer calls to school phone. Take messages. Distribute messages in a timely fashion (within 1-2 days generally) accordingly. Provide information by phone regarding enrollment, observation days, etc.
Community Liaison / Organize food drives for families facing family "disruption" (i.e. birth of a child, injured/sick parent, etc.). Plan casual community building events outside of school hours (i.e. hikes, BBQ's at Derby Reach, snowshoeing, etc.)
Facebook / Posts updates to Facebook. Familiar with which children may not have their image published.
Instagram / Posts updates to Instagram. Familiar with which children may not have their image published.
Twitter / Posts updates to Twitter. Familiar with which children may not have their image published.
