VOCABULARY ACTIVITY GRID

Sound Hunter:
Explore in groups different texts from different contexts.
Find words with different spellings for the same sound, write their meaning and use them in sentences
Sub groups:
-tion: condition, recognition, exhibition,
-cian: dietician, physician,
-cean: ocean, crustacean
-sion: tension, pension / Base Word:
Create as many words as possible using a given base word and selected affixes
EG: base word – occupy
Affixes: un, mis, es, ant, ation, ed, ied, ies, al, pre, ing, er, s, est, ancy
Share and reflect on meaning and spelling changes.
Search for other words that use the base word.
Words that can be made: occupant, occupation, occupies, occupied, preoccupy, unoccupied / Making words:
(Teacher selects a secret word eg. ‘mountain’. Students are provided with letters of a secret word.)
Separate the consonants and vowels.
Manipulate the letters to make as many words possible starting with 1-letter words and increasing. Use all the letters to come up with the secret word
Word Cline:
Students generate words with similar meaning and arrange them to show a graduating intensity, according to a given criterion.
Eg. Family
Synonyms: relatives, kin, people, folks, ancestors, realtions
Students arrange words rising intensity from distant relationship to close relationship
Students discuss in small groups and reach a consensus about the order of the arrangement / Word, Words, Words,
Read a text
Highlight a selected part of speech – such as adjectives, nouns and verbs – in sentences
Discuss in small groups the function of the highlighted words.
Create a definition for the selected part of speech.
Use in writing sentences or a story.
Share definition, words and writing with the class / Word Observation
Select a class word eg. environment
  • What part of speech is it?
  • Does the word have a base or root word?
  • How many syllables?
  • How many letters?
  • Any particular letter patterns?
  • Is it a compound word?

Each activity will be explicity taught

On students mastering the activity, they then may be used as Vocabulary Task Cards or Vocabulary Activity Grid for Independent activity.
