LESSON PLANNING SHEET

VISUALISING EXCELLENCE AT BRIGHOUSE HIGH

AAA/Depts/Teachers/Lessonn Planning Sheet

Context

/ Pupils have previously been taught the key health and safety aspect of climbing on the Brighouse high school wall and how to help set up etc. Pupils Have also been shown how to put on a harness, tie a figure of 8 knot and a stopper knot and how to belay another pupil. Over the last 2 lessons we have mainly been building on pupils confidence of climbing and belaying and will now be going on to some of the specific skills on the GCSE Criteria. Pupils did not climb last week due to exams.
Learning Objectives /
  • All pupils should continue to build upon their confidence to both climb and belay a peer. Some less confident pupils may need a little more encouragement and support, whilst other more confident pupils should be starting to attempt to follow set routes/colours.
  • Most pupils will attempt to try 1 out of 4 manoeuvres set on the GCSE PE climbing criteria. Some pupils may not yet be confident to try this manoeuvre and may need extra time to build on this; other more confident pupils should master the manoeuvre on the simplest route and should then start attempting a higher level route.
  • All pupils should know what they need to do to improve or complete the GCSE criteria.

Differentiation

/
  • Additional support from teacher
  • Putting less confident climber with a confident belayer
  • Putting more able pupils together to challenge each other
  • Less confident pupils to attempt manoeuvre at a lower height where possible
  • Rainbow routes – less confident climbers can use any colour holds
  • Set routes – more climbers can attempt set routes each at different degree’s of difficulty.
  • Use of visual aids
  • Provide further explanation and demonstrate (on low level)
  • Put less able pupils on the simpler manoeuvres or skills

Challenge /
  • Different degrees of challenge based on different climbing routes
  • Each group has a set manoeuvre or skill to master

Starter /
  • Video of Alex Honnold free solo – a climber who climbs some of the highest rock faces without any climbing equipment. Video provides some excellent examples of the manoeuvres and skills we are aiming to learn today.
  • Go over the GCSE criteria – what we have achieved already and what our objectives are today and over the next few lessons.

Teaching episodes / Main session
Pupils will be asked to get in to groups of 3 (one group will be a 4)
Each group will be assigned a line number (section of the wall) and the manoeuvre/skill they will be aiming to achieve.
Pupils should get themselves harnessed up and can decide who is going to do what role.
  • 1 person should be the climber
  • 1 person should belay
  • 1 person will coach and record the climb – using climbing calls and utilising resources to assist the climber.
Pupils should rotate after each attempt – climber – coach – belay
Once Pupil have decided the role and set up the climb (including the rope attached to the belay device, and rope correctly tied to the climber) the teacher will check all harnesses and the connection of the rope to both the belay person and the climb then pupils can begin their task.
Each pupil should have a go at each role with in the group. Preferably with each person having at least 2 goes each.
Line 1 – Will work on Bridging and anchoring the belayer
Line 2 – Will work on Hand and Foot Jam
Line 3 – Will work on the Layback
Line 4 – Will work on the Mantle Shelf
A flip camera will be on hand, for coaches to film pupils whilst climbing so that the climber can see where they went wrong or how they can improve.
Pupils will also have access to a laptop to play videos about how to complete their task – encourage independent learning before asking. / 30 min
Plenary / Pupils should record their climbs and belaying on the log sheets provided.
Refer back to the climbing criteria and get pupils to tick off the manoeuvre if they have completed it and/or write what they need to do to improve.
Refer back to the objectives and tick off.
Assessment for learning /
  • Utilisation and reference of the GCSE criteria – pupils to tick off when they have achieved something and can see what they need to work on next.
  • Utilisation of resource cards – tick off key points
  • Peer evaluation and coaching
  • Utilisation of camera/video for play back.

Homework / Compulsory homework set during theory lesson.
Pupils should also be encouraged to develop their upper body strength, especially their forehand grip to assist in their climbing performance.
Optional extension homework – pupils should apply their knowledge about the different components of fitness to climbing, and state which components are most important in this activity. Pupils should also attempt to state which method of training would be most suited to improve these components.
