  7. Te Whakaminenga o Kāpiti and the Council are committed to the Zero Waste Event philosophy. To register as a vendor for this event we need you to make a commitment to use compostable or recyclable food packaging and to significantly reduce the other types of waste produced by your stall. To work out what this means for your stall, please read the guidelines below. Your co-operation is appreciated.

Zero Waste Guidelines

Most waste at events comes from food scraps and packaging. As vendors, we ask you to help us reduce waste by:

1.Use less packaging– Don’t give out more packaging than you need to. For example, you could offer napkins and straws at your stall but let people take what they need rather than giving them out.

2.Only use packaging that can be composted (or recycled) – Compostable food serving products (plates, cutlery, serviettes, cups) are the best option, as plastics coated in food cannot be recycled and will contaminate everything else in the recycling bin. A fully compostable plate with food on it can go straight into the compost bin – perfect! Recyclable packaging is acceptable for non-sticky drinks, e.g. soda cans or water bottles.

3. Help your customers to put their rubbish in the right place – Let your customers know whether the packaging from your stall is compostable, recyclable, or needs to go to landfill.

We will be providing rubbish and recycling stations for visitors. The materials that can go into these bins are:

  • Compost: food scraps, compostable packaging, food contaminated paper
  • Recycling: clean tin and aluminium cans, recyclable plastics grades 1-7 - must have the recycling symbol and be clean
  • Landfill: general waste – not compostable or recyclable

We have compiled a list of providers we expect you to consider, that produce compostable and recyclable food and drink packaging.
