Assessment Task

Scenario 1:
You have been asked to do research in order to appropriately celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King in a local parish. Prepare a report and present this at a meeting of the Parish Liturgy Committee. Be prepared to answer questions from the Committee. / OR / Scenario 2:
You are a TV reporter assigned to do the voice-over for a telecast of the celebrations of the Solemnity of Christ the King taking place in a local parish. Prepare a script for the occasion. Include background information. Be prepared to deliver this script to a watching audience.
/ This Solemnity of Christ the King is celebrated in the Catholic Church on the last Sunday of the Liturgical Year (26 November 2006). The celebrations always include the Mass of the Solemnity and sometimes, other liturgical events such as a procession. Some Protestant Churches also celebrate a Feast Day for Christ the King. /

Part 1 – Background:

Write an explanation of the significance of the Solemnity of Christ the King [100 words minimum].

In your explanation, include:

-Reasons why Jesus is acknowledged as King by Christians

-Reasons why the solemnity is celebrated at this time of the liturgical year

-Why is it called a ‘Solemnity.’

Part 2 – The Mass:

a) Explain why the Mass is important to Catholics and why it is an appropriate liturgy for the celebrationof Christ the King [approximately 200 words].

b) Review the Scriptures set to be read at the Mass of the Solemnity and write an explanation of the sort of king the readings portray [approximately 100 words].

c) What colour are the vestments and why [ 25 words]?

d) Describe (drawings are appropriate) the designs of banners used in the church or elsewhere.Explain the symbols and colours usedon these banners.

e) Describe (drawings are appropriate) any other decorations used, particularly those in the sanctuary (on and around the altar), and explain their significance.

Part 3 – Other liturgical event:

Describe any celebration for the Solemnity extra to the Mass and explain why this event is appropriate for the occasion.

Presentation:

Your typed or neatly handwritten Report / Script, including illustrations, should be on sheets of A4 paper, stapled together and in the order of the three tasks outlined above. Use your own words. Where information has been obtained from books or the internet the source must be referenced.The due date is Monday 18 September 2006.
