Annual Report - 2012
The past year has once again proved to be a successful one in which the Sport Bureau had some significant achievements on and off the playing field, while continuing to cater for the needs of the NMMU students and community through the provision of social, recreational and competitive sport.
In order to facilitate sound administration and management the following committees form an integral part of the management of the NMMU Sport Bureau:
*Sport Committee (4 meetings per year)
*Student Sport Council (8 meetings per year)
*Chairpersons Meeting (2 meetings per year)
*Sport specific Club Meetings and AGM’s for all the Clubs
*Sport Bureau Executive and Finance Committee (at least 1 per month)
*Managers Meeting (every second week)
Further, the Sport Bureau has representation on a number of other NMMU committees, as well as a variety of micro and macro local, provincial and national sporting body committees, including University Sport South Africa (USSA).
The Sport Bureau is committed to market the NMMU as a university of choice for prospective students to further their academic and sporting career through media, television and radio. This is achieved through performances on the playing fields, the hosting of regional, national and international sporting and non-sporting events, outreach programmes, etc. About 850 articles and more than 375 photographs featuring NMMU teams or sportspeople appeared in the local and national written media with a value of nearly R8 million. In addition a number of sporting events and matches were broadcast on national radio and television programmes, particularly Varsity Cup Rugby and the newly established Varsity Sport Competitions, with larges Rand-values.
In order to achieve success on the sports field the Sport Bureau needs to supplement the grant received from the NMMU. Thus third-stream income is generated in the form of sport sponsorship, self-generated funding for programmes and events, etc. The value of the sponsorship, including product and advertising, for sport clubs, events, etc. amounted to R3.26 million in the year under review. The reality of 2012 was that we were not always masters ofour own destiny as our projected funding flow was sometimes affected by circumstances beyond our control or influence where two large sponsors did not continue with their sponsorship or meet their commitment. However, a number of smaller sponsors were concluded during the year, while at least three new sponsorships have been concluded for 2013.
In order to attract and retain academically sound students who are achievers on the sports fields the provision of bursaries is essential, with the NMMU and various sponsors making significant contributions in this regard. The success rates of these bursary holders over the past six years has shown that the recipients of the Sport bursaries show up to a 7% better success rate in courses passed than the rest of the student population.These students make a major contribution to the sporting achievements, creating brand awareness and raising the profile of the NMMU, as well as achieving academically showing that the NMMU Trust and the sponsors bursaries for Sport are playing a significant role in assisting the NMMU to produce well-rounded graduates. The Sport Bureau contributed to the research of the NMMU with one NRF rated researcher. The research focussed on the enhancement of performance and injury prevention in cricket players which resulted in a presentation at an international conference in Glasgow, Scotland.
Staffspecial achievements
*Kolie Brandt (Sport Manager) serves on the USSA Golf Selection Committee and the USSA Golf Disciplinary Committee
*Mark Tommy (Sport Manager) is a SAFA NMB Coaches Committee member, Chairperson of USSA EC Football and Strategic Advisor to professional football club, Bay Stars FC.
*Melinda Goosen (Sport Manager) was elected the Chairperson of the Organising committee of the Inaugural World University Netball Championships that was held in Cape Town, in July 2012 where South Africa won the silver medal. She is also Chairperson of USSA Netball
*Theresa le Roux (Sport Manager) was elected to the USSA Cycling executive committee
*Riaan Osman (Sport Manager) was appointed by Cricket South Africa as the liaison officer for the Mumbai Indians cricket franchise at the Champions League tournament in October.
He was also appointed to umpire the 5 match hockey Test series between India and South Africa in New Delhi in January.
He also serves as a selector for the EP Amateur cricket team and is the current chairperson for University Sport South Africa cricket.
*Cheslyn Gie (Sport Manager) serves on convener of the SA U21 Hockey team and is a South African Hockey Association (SAHA) Executive member heading up the High Performance Sub-Committee. He was also elected as the EP Men’s Coach for 2012 and he will also head up the High Performance training in the province.
*Zanele Mdodana (Sport Manager) captainedthe SA Senior National Netball team
*Bernard Petersen (Sport Manager) is an Executive member of USSA Volleyball
*Hugo Loubser (George Campus Sport Manager) is the current chairperson of USSA Surfing and convener of the USSA Rugby Sevens tournament hosted by NMMU George Campus that was held in December 2012.
*Derrick Hoshe (Supervisor) was selected as Team manager for the Eastern Province Marathon Team
*Richard Stretch (Director: Sport) serves as a committee member of the World Congress of Science and Sports and is the chairperson of committee for the 5th World Congress of Science and Medicine in Cricket to be held in Sydney, Australia in 2015.
Further, his NRF Research Rating, based on the quality and the impact of research outputs, has been has been renewed for a third period and will continue to 31 December 2018.
The NMMU took part in the Annual Inter-varsityhosted by Rhodes University in Grahamstown and which included Rhodes University, University of Fort Hare and Walter Sisulu University, and won the trophy for the fifth year in a row.
Some achievements that need to be highlighted in the various leagues and tournamentsare as follows:
*The Mecer NMMU Cricket Club had a number of fine achievements which include:
* The Mecer NMMU first cricket team won the Nelson Mandela Bay Cricket Board (NMBCB) Super League for the fourth successive year and they also won the T20 league.
* Simon Harmer represented SA 'A, Warriors, EP Amateur and the National University (USSA) team and returned excellent performances in all forms of the game.
* Simon Harmer was named the South African Student Cricketer of the Year for the second successive year at the CSA Cricket Awards.
* Sisanda Magala was named the EP Amateur bowler of the season, Solo Nqweni the EP u/19 player of the year, Colin Ackermann the EP Amateur batsman of the year and Riaan Osman was named the Provincial Administrator of the Year at the EP Cricket Awards Dinner. Aldre Nel received the Super League Batsman of the Year Award for the second successive year.
* The Mecer NMMU first cricket team became the National University cricket champions after beating the University of Western Cape in the final in Port Elizabeth -their third title in four years.
*The FNB NMMU Rugby Club had some good achievements including:
* Brent Janse van Rensburg was the Assistant Coach for the SA University team that played against Eastern Province vin Port Elizabeth and the Namibia National team in Windhoek Namibia
* After a much improved Varsity Cup campaign team members received professional contracts to play for Griqualand West, SWD Eagles, Mapumalanga and Eastern Province
* Jaco Swanepoel was chosen as the Varsity Cup Forward that Rocks
* All three NMMU Senior club sides were on top of the log in the Super League Grand Challenge but withdrew from the completion after matches were postpones for more than 6 weeks due to a legal dispute between other teams in the league. The competition was never completed.
* 13 managers and coaches qualified after attending the Boksmart course
* Very successful Steinhoff Koshuis league with 10 teams participating and a total of 49 matches being played. Northernz, the winners, will represent NMMU in the Varsity Cup Koshuis Competition 2013
* Howard Mnisi and Marlin Ruiters represented the SA Students 7’s team in Morocco and Howard Mnisi also represented the SA Students 7’s team in France
* Howard Mnisi also represented the SA Students rugby team against the Eastern Province team in Port Elizabeth.
*ABSA NMMU Athletics Clubhad the following achievements:
* 1st in the EP Track & Field league team competition, as well as the men and women leagues
* Michael Louwrens won a bronze medal at the 2012 Paralympic in London
* Ischke Senekal won gold and silver medal @ SA Jnr T&F champs and was selected for the SA Team to World Junior Champs
* Jeannie van Dyk was selected to the SA Team to African Champs
* Magdalene Louw won a gold medal at the SA Track and Field Championships
* Emile van Niekerk won a gold medal at the SA Athlon Championships
*The NMMU Hockey Club had some fine achievements which include:
* Nathan Kops obtained his Level 2 coaching certificate (the highest level in SA).
* The NMMU Hockey Club now has 4 coaches, Nathan Kops, Leroy Johnston, Satchinan Reddy and Cheslyn Gie, with Level 2 qualifications.
* The NMMU Hockey Club won the Most Promising Men’s Player of the Year Awards at the annual EP Hockey awards.
* The NMMU Hockey Men’s team won the league title by finishing the season unbeaten in all 14 matches. This was last achieved by the UPE hockey team in the 90’s. The NMMU Woman’s Hockey Team came 2nd in the League.
* The NMMU Woman’s Hockey Team won the KC March Easter Tournament title with the men’s team finishing 2nd.
* The NMMU Hockey Club hosted a 6-a-side tournament in September 2012 an attracted 20 teams and will now become an annual tournament on the EPHF calendar.
* The NMMU Ladies team made a semi-final at USSA week. This is the first time in their short history as NMMU
*SPAR NMMU Netballhad some fine achievements which include:
* NMMU team won the league for the 8th consecutive year, as well as winning the C- and Men’s-league
* Zanele Mdodanawas selected as captain of the SA Senior National Team which included Nontle Gwavuand Mampho Tsotetsi
* Zanele Vimbela was selected for the SA Students Team for Students World Cup Tournament
* Lana Krigewas appointed coach of the SA Senior National Coach for Fast 5 Series
*MECER NMMU Cycling team was the overall winner of the EP Champions League
*Vodacom NMMU Soccer Club has a number of good achievements which included the following:
* The Vodacom NMMU Madibaz Premier team (ladies) won the PEFA League and Knock-Out Trophy - the second consecutive year in PEFA Ladies League
* The Vodacom NMMU Madibaz Premier Team (Men) won the PEFA Top 4 Challenge.
* The Vodacom NMMU Madibaz Premier Reserve team (men) won the PEFA Reserve Knock-Out Cup
* The Vodacom NMMU Madibaz team (men) and (women) qualified for the USSA National Club Championships in Cape Town
* Ntombifuthi Mncwango was selected to the USSA National Women team, unfortunately no tournament was held.
*Vodacom NMMU Soccer Club has seven students signed to the local professional soccer club, BAY STARS FC
* NMMU Soccer Club launched a branding campaign that see the club advertised on four bus shelters strategically placed in Summerstrand and Newton Park.
*NMMU Tennis player Marshall Marsh was selected for the SA Wheelchair Tennis team
*NMMU Chess hosted the USSA Chess tournament, the 3rdNMMU Open Chess Tournament and the annual Invitational tournament for the top six players in the EP
*NMMU Squash had a number of good achievements which included
* Winning the Men’s 1st leagues for the first time in the history of NMMU
* 3 players were selected to the USSA Squash squad
* Hosted the Brian Bands NMMU Open Squash Tournament which will become an annual event on the SA Squash calendar
*NMMU Surfing won the USSA Surfing tournament with three surfers selected for the USSA tournament team.
*NMMU Water polo women won the EP Knockout competition
*NMMU Underwater Hockey team won the SAUWH National Club Championships
*NMMU George:
* Cricket: Two students were members of the SWD Senior cricket team
* Hockey (Men): Three students were members of the Southern Cape team who won the 2012 SA Country Districts Hockey Tournament* Rugby: NMMU George reached the semi-final of the President’s League.
* Rugby:SWD U/19 included 9 club members.
SWD U 21 included 12 club members.
SWD Eagles Senior team included 4 club members.
* Tennis: Won the SWD Tennis Men’s Premier League competition.
* Athletics:Armond Nel won a silver medal at the 2012 USSA Track and Field Championship for 20km walk and was selected to represent South Africa at the World Cup in Saransk, Russia.
The annual University Sport South Africa (USSA) tournaments provide opportunities to measure the strength of the NMMU teams against other university student teams. The NMMU teams participated in 15 USSA tournaments with the top achievements as follows:
*FNB NMMU Rugby 1st XV finished 3rdat the USSA tournament
*NMMU Karate Club came 1st at USSA for the fourth year in a row
*Mecer NMMU Cricket Club won the USSA cricket tournament. Corbyn Dolley (capt) and Edward Moore were included in the USSA Tournament team whilst Josh Dolley was named in the reserves. Corbyn Dolley was named the USSA player of the tournament.
*NMMU Surfing won the USSA Surfing competition for men
*NMMU Hockey (Women) came 4th in the A Section – their best results for many years. The NMMU Hockey Men finished 2nd and won silver medals.
*The SPAR NMMU Netball team ended 6th in the A section at the USS Championships
*The MECER NMMU Cycling team ended 4th at the USSA Championships
*ABSA NMMU Athletics teamfinished in 7th position
*Vodacom NMMU Soccer teams (men) and women both finished 2nd in their respective USSA-EC Football Regional league competitions
*NMMU Golfwon the gold medal for the B-section
*NMMU George teams:
* NMMU Rugby won the Bowl competition at the USSA Rugby 7’s
* NMMU Cricket participated for the first time in the USSA Cricket tournament and were 2nd in the C-section
During 2012 the University Sports Company (USC) was established in order to represent the interests of the participating universities and to administer the Competition Media Rights Agreement. Eleven universities have joined and are equal partners in the USC. The USC’s main objective is the administration, development, co-ordination and promotion of high performance university sport in which the participants take part in on a non-professional basis as a pastime and the promotion of the common interest of University Sport South Africa (“USSA”), Higher Education Institutions (“HEI’s”) and the member universities. In this regard, the media rights were pooled for commercial purposes. The sporting codes included are Football, Rugby Seven-a-Side, Beach Volleyball, Netball, Hockey and Athletics.
The USC appointed ASEM Varsity Sport (ASEM VS) as exclusive service provider to manage the media rights in respect of the competitions and to stage the competitions as agreed by the USC and the member universities. ASEM VS has concluded a broadcast deal with SuperSport for the live broadcast of the competitions; and secured adequate sponsorship for the competitions. Secondary sponsors have also been secured for travel and accommodation. Dr Muthwa (DVC: IS) serves on the USC Executive.
At the end of 2012 the first two Varsity Sport competitions took place and the NMMU Women’s Beach Volleyball finished 4th in a very exciting and well organised event, while the Rugby 7’s finished 5th out of 10 teams. These matches were shown live on SuperSport.
The NMMU continues to have a large representation in national junior, senior and age group teams, national student teams (USSA), provincial teams and outstanding individual performances at national championship events (Appendix 1). The NMMU contributed 88 sportspersons to 19 different senior provincial federations and a large number to the provincial junior and age-group teams, with 10 of these representing South Africa at the highest level, 3 at Junior level, 1 at Age-group level, 3 representing South African Disabled teams and 16 selected to represent the University Sport South Africa (USSA) team.
