A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in honor of Carrie Schmidt of Louisville, Kentucky, for her extraordinary commitment and outstanding services as a Christian, college professor, administrator, and public servant over the past twenty-six years.

WHEREAS, Carrie Schmidt devoted from 1976 to 1980 helping students achieve excellence in the educational field at the Downtown Campus of the University of Louisville as a graduate teaching assistant and received the Graduate Teaching Assistant Award while there; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Schmidt has continued that same outstanding devotion to helping students at the Southwest Campus of Jefferson Community College since 1981 as a mathematics teacher, coordinator of the Southwest Natural Science Learning Lab, assistant of the annual Science Olympiad and organizer of the Kentucky Science Olympiad for middle school students, coordinator of the Southwest Natural Science Learning Lab, member of the selection committee for recipients of summer teaching fellowships, chairwoman of the committee for the school's promotion and tenure committee, and faculty advisor for both the Baptist Student Union and the Student Government Association; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Schmidt has been recognized by the University of Kentucky as the recipient of a Great Teacher Award; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Schmidt, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, has channeled the same quest for excellence she demonstrated as a student years ago to fostering that organization's goal of recognizing and promoting academic excellence by serving in various leadership and supportive roles--nominating new members, preparing the chapter director and college news and meeting updates, assisting needy women to obtain clothing for job interviews, and raising money for scholarships for women in education; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Schmidt has given countless volunteer hours to the Valley Mammogram Program transporting women to receive free mammograms through the Valley Mammogram Program, and has donated her artistic talents and time to make items for sale to help fund scholarships and community projects through the Valley Women's Club; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Schmidt has tirelessly volunteered her time as a tutor to help children achieve greater educational understanding at Stone Street and Stuart Elementary Schools as well as inventoried books for the Stone Street Elementary School library; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Schmidt was recognized in the year 2000 by Jefferson County Judge Rebecca Jackson with the "Millennium Maker Award for Outstanding Civic Contributions" for her exemplary service to the people of Jefferson County; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Schmidt has also given to others at Epworth United Methodist Church of Louisville, Kentucky, by serving as worship coordinator, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the choir, and a volunteer to deliver meals to shut-ins, and helping with the church meal preparation and cleanup; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Schmidt is a loving wife, proud mother of three, stepmother of two, grandmother of one, and is considered by her colleagues to be the hardest-working woman, wife, mother, teacher, friend, and confidante they have ever encountered; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Schmidt has devoted more than a quarter of a century in selfless and dedicated service to glorify God and enrich the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, by demonstrating a true servant's heart Carrie Schmidt has exemplified the Apostle Paul's admonition to the Church at Rome: "We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not Himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached Thee fell on me." Romans 15:1-3;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby honor and commend Carrie Schmidt for her many years of dedicated service to the Lord Jesus Christ; her family; the University of Louisville; Jefferson Community College; its faculty, staff, and students; and to the people of Jefferson County. We thank her for her many contributions to further godly virtues, for educational excellence, for inspiring others to share their talents and skills, and for volunteering unending hours to improve the lives of countless residents of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this 26th day of February in the year of our Lord Jesus Christ 2002, it does so in honor of Carrie Schmidt.

Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to President Mike McCall, Kentucky Community and Technical College System, 2624 Research Park Drive, P. O.
