A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of Alice Harris Blye.

It is with the deepest respect and admiration that we pay homage and tribute to Alice Harris Blye, and we pause in silent reverence for her eternal soul.

WHEREAS, Alice Harris Blye was born on December 27, 1926, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Joseph Harris and Alice Burrell Harris; and

WHEREAS, Alice Harris Blye received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education with honors from Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia, and engaged in further studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois; and

WHEREAS, on November 12, 1950, she was introduced by Mary Gant to a young soldier, who asked for her hand in marriage by letter on the very same day, and on February 3, 1951, she became the devoted wife of Cecil A. Blye for the remainder of her life; and

WHEREAS, Alice Harris Blye was the adored mother of Cecilia Blye, Cecil Blye, Jr., and Steven Blye; and

WHEREAS, Alice Harris Blye was the cherished grandmother of England Ariel Blye, and the revered mother-in-law of Viennese Blye; and

WHEREAS, Alice Harris Blye was the loving sister of Irma Browne, Grace E. Townes, and Dr. Joseph B. Harris; and

WHEREAS, Alice Harris Blye was the beloved sister-in-law of Catherine Harris, Olive Harris, Dorothy Blye Jackson, and Verdelle Blye Jones, and a precious aunt to twelve nieces and seven nephews; and

WHEREAS, Alice Harris Blye became a devout Christian at an early age, having accepted the teachings of Jesus Christ and becoming a member of the First Baptist Church in South Richmond, Virginia, and developed into an extraordinary spiritual leader to anyone with eyes to see or ears to hear, subsequently serving as Bible School Teacher and Director of the Youth Division at the Fifth Street Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Alice Harris Blye taught elementary school in Blackstone, Virginia, and Richmond, Virginia, and faithfully served the Jefferson County Public Schools System in Louisville, Kentucky, as a Teacher Extraordinarius at Virginia Avenue Elementary School, later renamed Carter Traditional Elementary School, and at Sanders Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Alice Harris Blye will be remembered for having engaged the minds of her children, lifting the cloak of ignorance in furtherance of the struggle of her people, and providing the perfect quantity of attention to every single child under her care and custody, and will be remembered for her vision, spiritual leadership, and overall concern for the betterment of her church, the children of the Commonwealth, and her community; and

WHEREAS, Alice Harris Blye traversed these earthly bounds on February 18, 2001, and her passing has left a void and irreparable emptiness in the hearts of her relatives, her friends, her acquaintances, and especially her students that will be virtually impossible to fill; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Alice Harris Blye is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth of Kentucky;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Alice Harris Blye, and extends to her family and friends its most heartfelt sympathy and condolences.

Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of, and in tribute to, Alice Harris Blye.

Section 3. The clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mr. Cecil A. Blye at 247 Shawnee Terrace, Louisville, Kentucky 40211.
