University Study Demonstrates Dramatic Energy Savings from Indow Window Installations
Increased Comfort Drives Behavior Modification, Saving Energy
(Portland, OR) — A recently completed pilot study administered by Portland State University’s Green Building Research Laboratory recorded reductions in home heating energy consumption averaging 19% over the course of a year following the installation of Indow Windows without any other energy modifications. Computer models had predicted a 10% reduction while actual performance far exceeded the model. The researchers believe the extra savings came because the homeowners were more comfortable and therefore less likely to turn up the thermostat on cold days.
The report states, “The homes are anticipated by the model tosave roughly 10% on their natural gas bills. The fact that the average measured savings was nearly double this(at 19%) might be a direct result of the thermal comfort benefits of the Indow Windows. Specifically, sincethe interior window surface of the Indow product is much warmer than would be the inner surface of thesingle pane of glass, the occupant within the building will feel warmer standing next to the Indow Window than standing next to a single pane of glass even if the room air temperature is the same in both cases. As aresult, the occupant is more likely to operate their home heating system at a lower thermostat setting after theIndow Windows are installed.

The study was conducted in four Portland Homes built between 1901 and 1978. Energy usage data was collected for the 12 months prior to the installation of the Indow Windows and for 12 months after the Indow Windows were installed. The homeowners refrained from making any other energy efficiency upgrades for the entire 24-month window.
