Background:

North Carolina Families United currently seeks a Youth Program Advisor. The goal is to build their capacity to develop networks that support young adults in advocating for their vision for change in the mental health system.

Position Summary:

North Carolina Families United Inc. is a statewide organization committed to helping children with emotional and behavioral challenges and their families through support, advocacy and systemic change.Youth M.O.V.E. – North Carolina (the youth partner of North Carolina Families United) is the statewide chapter of a national youth-led organization.

Vision: We the members of Youth M.O.V.E. North Carolina will offer an avenue where young people can embrace their experiences and share a distinct voice with their communities. We are dedicated to supporting and empowering youth through peer support and self-advocacy. We envision a system where the youth voice is represented and heard, and used to change inequalities relating to youth involvement throughout all system levels. We work towards a day where youth are actively involved in the decisions affecting them and not afraid to speak out and share their personal struggles.

Mission: We the members of Youth M.O.V.E. North Carolina will work as a diverse collective of young adults to empower youth to advocate for their rights and rights of other youth at the local, state and national level. We will raise awareness of youth struggles across all systems and work to deduce the stigma attached to mental health.

Reporting & Essential Expectations:

Under the direction of the Youth Transition Program Director, the Youth Program Advisor performs duties related to youth leadership, advocacy, and involvement including all or some of the following:

  • Overseeing and advisingyouth/young adults as they develop, coordinate, and implement youth-led programs, projects, principles, and policiesrelated to mental wellness;
  • Adhering to the values and principals of System of Care (SOC) based on the preferences of youth;
  • Respecting the culture of youth, their families and the communities that serve them ina culturally-competent manner ;
  • Supporting youth to develop training tools, guides and other documents
  • Providing transportation to youth/young adults when reasonable options for transportation are not available;
  • Building partnerships statewide with youth-led programs/organizations;
  • Securing space for youth-led activities and projects;
  • Supporting youth in the implementation of their ideas related to systems change in the mental health system
  • Reporting youth activities, projects, and any programmatic challenges, that may create a barrier to achieving said goals/objectives with the Youth Transition Program Director.

Preferred Requirements:

For this position, it is preferred, but not necessary that the applicant is:

  • A recipient of mental health and or substance useservices; or
  • A family member of an individual that is a mental health consumer; and
  • A graduate of (or interest in completing) a Leadership Series hosted by North Carolina Families United, NFFCMH, Inc.

Personal Characteristics:

Additional consideration will be given to a candidate that believes they are:

  • Passionateabout mental health related issues;
  • Willing to take the lead from youth/young adultsin achieving their vision for change at various levels of the mental health system;
  • Eager tomodel adult behavior that promotes youth leadership and a safe environment for youth/young adults to respectfully voice their ideas, approaches, and opinions to change;
  • Ready to actively supervise and provide ongoing supportto young adults in achieving their vision for creating change at various levels of the mental health system;
  • Accepting of youth/young adults as the experts of their lived experiences with mental health (including education, child welfare, and juvenile justice systems involvement);
  • Enthusiasticabout engaging youth/young adults in opportunities for advocacy
