UNIT DETAILS: In this unit, students will be exploring the Romantic Period in English Literature. They will examine the political and social context in which the Romantic poets worked and look at the work of a number of prominent Romantic Poets. They will revise poetic techniques and analyse their work in identifying how they have conveyed their philosophies. Students will write and deliver a spoken eulogy for a Romantic poet of their choice. Subsequently they will produce a feature article that explains the way in which the philosophies of Romantic poetry are evident in contemporary popular music.

Identify Romantic poets and summarise the philosophies and ideals of the Romantic Poets. / Can I list five Romantic Poets?
Can I summarize their philosophies and ideals?
Define the Romantic period and associated key terms / Can I define key terms as per class exercises?
To summarise the background factors that lead to the development of the Romantic Movement. / Can I summarize the background to the Romantic Movement?
Summarise the biographical information about the main 5 English poets.
(nationality, time, background, philosophies and works). / Can I complete retrieval chart summarizing biographical information for each of the 5 poets (nationality, time, background, philosophies and works).
Identify and apply poetic techniques.
Analyse key poems by Coleridge, Wordsworth, Blake, Shelley and Byron to identify themes, philosophies and poetic techniques. / Can I identify techniques such as metaphor, simile, rhyme, alliteration, personification, assonance, allusion and apply to analysis of poetry?
Can I discuss themes, philosophies and poetic techniques in detail in study of at least two Romantic poems.
Revise the generic features of a eulogy
(structure, sequence, language choices, spoken and visual codes and conventions ) / Can I identify the structure and language features of a eulogy in examples given?
Can I complete a draft eulogy using appropriate structure and features?
Describe the purpose and requirements of the feature article assignment. / Can I complete notes explaining criteria and assessment requirements?
