Centre for Offshore Research and Engineering
Department of Civil Engineering, NationalUniversity of Singapore
Date: 15 September 2004 (Wednesday)
Times: 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm

SYNOPSIS - VERYLARGEFLOATINGSTRUCTURESIn this lecture, the audience will be introduced to the world of very large floating structures (VLFS) that have been gradually appearing in the waters off developed coastal cities (and countries with coastlines). Their presence is largely due to a severe shortage of land and the sky-rocketing land costs in recent times. After providing a description of a VLFS and highlighting its advantages (under certain conditions) over the traditional land reclamation in creating space from the sea, the speaker will bring to attention the early, the present and future applications of VLFS. The input design data, hydroelastic analysis and design considerations for very large floating structures will also be briefly discussed, albeit in the most basic forms. In the lecture, there will also be a 15-minute video presentation on the Mega-Float (the world's largest man-made floating island).
CV OF SPEAKER - PROFESSOR WANG CHIEN MINGC.M. Wang is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He graduated from MonashUniversity in Civil Engineering with a First Class Honours in 1978 and was awarded a M.Eng.Sc. and a Ph.D. degree from the same university in 1980 and 1982, respectively.
Professor Wang is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (U.K.), Institution of Engineers Singapore and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is presently theChairman of the IES/IStructE Joint Committee. His research interests are in the areas of structural stability, vibration, optimization, plated structures and Mega-Floats. He has written over 300 scientific publications including three books "Vibration of Mindlin Plates", "Shear Deformable Beams and Plates: Relationships with Classical Solutions" and "Exact Solutions for Buckling of Structural Members". The first two books were published in 1998 and 2000, respectively, by Elsevier Science while the latest book is published by CRC Press in July 2004. He is an Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics and an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Computational Structural Engineering.
