Unit Summary
Students will analyze the nutritional value of fast food menu choices and determine if there are healthy options at fast food restaurants, basing their research on the FDA’s Recommended Daily Allowances.

Prerequisite Skills
Familiarity with basic nutrition terminology (calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium).
Experience using the internet.
Competency creating a Word document.
Instructional Procedures
A video clip from the movie Super Size Me and a brief survey using a Google Docs form will engage students in thinking about fast food. Students will be directed to a PBworks page where their instructions and links will be located for their assignment. Students will use websites that provide nutritional information for fast food items to try to assemble a 1-day menu of fast food eating that stays within the recommended daily allowances published by the FDA. Students will record nutritional information they find on the websites to determine if it is possible to find healthy options for a day of fast food eating. A discussion of their findings with peers and with the class as a whole will follow their research.
