  1. Aims of the Programme

  • Develop a critical approach to theories, techniques and methods in international waste management and its role in sustainable development.

  • Provide students with a learning environment in which they will develop their capacity for independent study, their ability to collaborate with others in team settings, and their capacity for critical thought and reflection

  • To refine students’ ability to communicate in written and verbal English and to relate their communication skills to the needs of the waste management sector

  • Equip students with research skills to successfully undertake a complicated piece of independent research

  • Develop in students a critical approach to the complex environmental, social and economic interactions occurring in internationalwaste management

  • Enable students to experience cultural influences on specific aspects of waste management by active engagement within the context of an overseas field study.

  • Equip students with a variety of approaches to involve people in decision-making

  • Enhance students’ employability (with a focus on international private and public sectors) and their ability to liaise effectively within a global context.

A.Knowledge and Understanding
Students will be able to:
A1.Utilise project planning and management ininternational waste setting.
A2.Critically evaluate the cultural influence on waste management practices
A3.Contextualise global economics in relation to waste management
A4.Evaluate the role of global waste management in sustainable development.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Teaching will be through lectures, case studies, seminars and international field visit supported by materials developed by external experts.
Students will be responsible for gathering evaluating and interpreting materials. Students are also responsible for non-directed reading and discriminating a wide arrange of published material and other sources of information.
An assessed project allows for a student centred study, developing a high level of research skills appropriate to their strengths.The project allows a student to develop a detailed knowledge in a particular aspect of waste management.
Assessment methods
Assessment will be through course work (essay, field or desk based project). Students will be actively encouraged to engage in discussions and non-assessed presentation and coursework throughout the programme.

Students will be able to:
B1.Critically evaluate the socio-economic pressures on strategic waste planning of countries
B2.Apply appropriate research methodologies in a field based setting
B3.Assess the ecological impacts of current waste management practices
B4.Adapt sustainable waste management strategies in light ofcultural attitudes and behaviour to waste.

Various methods will enhance the students’ thinking skills, including case studies allowing application of knowledge to real-life scenarios. This will be augmented by students gathering evaluating and interpreting materials. Students are also responsible for non-directed reading and discriminating a wide arrange of published material and other sources of information

Teaching and Learning Methods
There will be opportunities to develop IT, writing and presentation skills in assignments. Feedback on these through the year will improve the students’ other skills. The project will involve considerable time management assisted through tools such as Gantt Charts.

15.Personal Development Planning
Personal tutors will be assigned to all students and they will assist them in developing and implementing their own Personal Development Plans.
16.Admissions criteria
Programme Specifications include minimum entry requirements, including academic qualifications, together with appropriate experience and skills required for entry to study. The minimum entry requirement for the course is a recognised Bachelor Degree with honours at lower class second or above or its equivalent.
IELTS 6.5 and above
