SCRIPT

SPEAKER 1: Well, we all went to that new place, Luigi’s, for Susan’s birthday. We had a good time, of course,but I don’t thinkI’ll be going there again. Especially not for a birthday dinner. It is the last place you want to go for a celebration. Everyone’s really quiet, and the waiters, although I thought they did quite a good job actually, all looked a bit miserable. And the furniture all looked cheap and it was very poorly decorated. No, not my kind of place at all. But, as I say, we had a good time and actually I quite enjoyed my meal.

SPEAKER 2:Yes, I stupidly decided to take everyone to Luigi’s for my birthday. And even more stupidly offered to pay the bill. When it came, I couldn’t believe it! We had five small starters, five main dishes, we didn’t have any desserts because we were going to have a birthday cake back at mine afterwards, and a few drinks, of course. And the whole thing came to more than $200. Incredible!

SPEAKER 3: I actually had fun on Susan’s birthday, but that was in spite of where we went, not because of it! I know Phil didn’t like the decoration and furniture much, but I didn’t really mind that. What I did object to was having to wait over half an hour for our starters to arrive, and then, at the end, another half an hour to get the bill. And the waiters didn’t even apologise for the delay.

SPEAKER 4: No, not going to Luigi’s again. I mean, these days, you expect more than just one vegetarian dish on the menu, don’t you? And if you didn’t like pasta, you were in a big trouble. I know it’s an Italian restraint, but you’d think they’d at least offer some alternatives, wouldn’t you? Not impressed at all. Though it was lovely to see Susan again. Haven’t seen her for ages!

SPEAKER 2: I don’t think any of us really liked it, but that didn’t stop us having fun, of course. The food wasn’t bad, but I did feel there wasn’t much of it. I ordered seafood tagliatelle, and really there were only a couple of prawns and a few pieces of tagliatelle in the whole thing. I was still hungry when we left, but after Susan paid the bill- we didn’t leave a tip for the waiter!- we all went back to her place for some birthday cake, and that filled me up!
