3.1 WILL

Form

Will + infinitive (without to)

Will is a modal auxiliary verb. The forms of will are the same for all persons.

Affirmative and negative

I ‘ll (will) come.

He/She/It won’t help you.

We/You/They invite Tom.

Question

What time will you be back?

Use

Will is used:

1. to express a future intention made at the moment of speaking.

‘It’s Tina’s birthday.’ ‘Is it? Ainhoa and Patricia will buy her some flowers.’

I’ll give Dani my phone number.

‘Do you want the blue or the red pen?’ ‘I’ll take the red one.’

2. to express an offer.

Andrea will carry your suitcase.

Manuel, Imane and Doae will do the washing-up.

3. To make predictions.

Jose Miguel will get 5 excellents this school year.

Ada won’t fail any subject.

Note

1. We do not use will in the action (if) clause.

If it rains... NOT If it will rain...

2. The action clause if... can come at the beginning of the sentence or at the end.

If Jialu works hard, her parents will buy her more books.

Her parents will buy her more books if Jialu works hard.

3. We can also find the word unless which means ‘if...not’ in the action clause.

Unless Ada apologises, Youssef and Natalia won’t talk to her anymore.

Youssef and Natalia won’t talk to her anymore unless Ada apologises.

Use

The first conditional is used to express a possible action and a probable result in the future. So, it expresses a situation that is certain or likely to happen in the future.

If Desire’s mum comes, she’ll bring us to McDonalds.

Jair, Abdullah and Yahya will get wet if they don’t take an umbrella.
