  1. You and a partner will be assigned Italy or Germany.
  2. Take notes on the section you are assigned (Germany or Italy) on the back of this piece of paper.

  5. Your comic will be used by others to understand Unification. Be ready to talk about it in class and be aware that it will be on display.

Italy: McKay textbook pgs 826-829

Your comic must include the following information/ideas:

  • Identify the various parts Italy was divided into and who (person or empire) controlled them.
  • Identify the following people and their role in Unification: Mazzini, Cavour, Garibaldi, Pope Pius IX
  • Red Shirts
  • You comic must consider and explain (directly or indirectly) the following questions:

Why did Italy’s division into separate parts make unification difficult for those who supported it?

Historians say that Italy was unified through diplomacy in the north and nationalistic revolution in the south. Using your understanding of the process of unification for Italy, how might your support/agree with that statement?

  • A SYNTHESIS frame: compare some aspect of the unification of Italy to another even in European History.

Germany: McKay textbook pgs 829-833 and p. 839-841

Your comic must include the following information

  • Iron and Blood Statement (Bismarck)“Not by speeches and votes of the majority, are the great questions of the time decided — that was the error of 1848 and 1849 — but by iron and blood.” (you don’t have to quote directly, but must include the phrase Iron and Blood).
  • Realpolitik with definition
  • Zollverein
  • Bismarck’s role
  • Kulturkampf
  • War with Danes
  • Austro Prussian War
  • Franco-Prussian War

  • A SYNTHESIS frame: compare some aspect of the unification of Italy to another even in European History.

“Storyboard” (brainstorming) space

This is the space for you and your partner to jot down a general plan for what you will put in each comic pane. What pictures will you draw? Where will you put the required information?

To reflect/for class discussion: Explain how the failures in 1848 in both Italy and Germany play a significant role in the eventual unification of these countries?

Why was war necessary to unify both of these nations?
