NIH - NI on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders : NIDCD Research on Hearing Health Care (R21)
001 301 496 7243
Aims : This FOA, issued by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institutes of Health, encourages Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant (R21) applications from institutions/organizations to support research leading to accessible and affordable hearing health care (HHC). The overarching emphasis is on the acquisition of knowledge that can be rapidly translated into new or enhanced approaches for access, assessment or interventions with a goal to delivering better hearing health care outcomes. Applications should seek quality approaches that are effective, affordable and deliverable to those who need them as well as implementable and sustainable in settings beyond the research environment.
Funding : The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed two years. Direct costs are limited to $275,000 over an R21 two-year period, with no more than $200,000 in direct costs allowed in any single year.
Amount : Unspecified Closing Date : 16 June 2011 Duration : 1 year - 3 years
NIH - NI on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders : NIDCD Clinical Trial Planning Grant (R34)
001 301 496 7243
Aims : The goal of this FOA is to provide support to complete the development of a comprehensive research protocol for large-scale, multicentre Phase III Definitive Clinical Trials (DCT). The planning grant is designed to permit early peer review of the proposed clinical trial in terms of its rationale, general design, organisational structure and implementation plan. The planning grant is used to support the development of a detailed Manual of Procedures (MOP) which is required for submission when applying for a Phase III Definitive Clinical Trial (PAR-08-205). The planning grant will provide support to establish the research team, develop tools for data management and oversight of the research, define recruitment strategies, and develop and finalise the MOP. The Planning Grant is NOT intended to support small Phase I/II Preliminary Clinical Trials. Applications for Phase I/II Preliminary Clinical Trials should use the NIDCD Phase I/II Preliminary Clinical Trials in Communication Disorders (PAR-08-204).
Funding : Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of the Institutes and Centers (ICs) provide support for this program, awards pursuant to this funding opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.

NIH - NI on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders : Proteomics in Auditory Developmental and Disease Processes (R21)
001 301 496 7243
Aims : High throughput technologies with the singular goal of comprising the most inclusive collection of representative genomic sequence, transcript, and/or protein, is a major goal of biomedical research. Data sets of transcript and protein expression provide investigators a cellular snapshot of existing proteins of a given complex/pathway, cell type, tissue and disease condition. While both sequence and transcript profiling have made significant advances in their technologies and utilisation, there remains a need to comprehensively catalogue protein content within many important cell types and tissues of the auditory sensory system. The molecular exploration of hearing has identified an impressive array of developing sensory organs and tissues. The identification of genes and the regulation of their corresponding proteins are important to normal and abnormal development, genetic disorders and environmental noise trauma. Numerous cell types, and their substructures, unique to the inner ear auditory pathway, such as hair cells, Deiters, Hensen, Claudius', interdental, and marginal/dark cells, and cells of the superior olivary complex have been virtually unexplored from a proteomic perspective. Additionally, middle ear infections (otitis media) and other diseases/disorders of the auditory system such as presbycusis, otosclerosis and cholesteatoma, pose important clinical challenges involving the identification of causative extrinsic factors, infectious organisms and the complexity of host response. Microarrays and other transcript trolling technologies have been used successfully to increase the number of candidate genes, but clearly there remain interpretive limitations to the correlative protein function. These assays bypass and/or inadequately address such substantial issues of post-translational modifications/regulation, turnover, and spliced transcripts.
Funding : Direct costs are limited to $275,000 over an R21 two-year period, with no more than $200,000 in direct costs allowed in any single year. Applicants may request direct costs in $25,000 modules, up to the total direct costs limitation of $275,000 for the combined two-year award period.
