Duration: 20 minutes

Overview:
Students use electronic worksheets to identify and sort geometric shapes. This is a good tool to use to assess your students’ knowledge of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. This can also be done whole group to teach the students how to identify the shapes.

Learning Outcomes (Curriculum and Technology)

Math
The learner will:
  • 1.M.4.1.1 Recognize, name, build, draw, and sort two- and three-dimensional shapes (triangle, rectangle, square, circle, cone, cube, cylinder).
  • 1.M.4.1.2 Sort and classify objects by more than one attribute.
  • 1.M.4.1.3 Use appropriate vocabulary.
Technology
The learner will:
  • P: demonstrate mouse skills: click, drag, drop, double click
  • P: correctly open and quit applications and folders
  • P: follow computer lab/classroom procedures for obtaining assistance when experiencing a problem with software/hardware (e.g. stay in seat and quietly raise hand)
  • P: demonstrate proper use and care of computer station (keyboard, mouse)
  • P: follow established computer lab/classroom rules for behavioral expectations
  • P: (optional) Select appropriate printer on network, print a document (and reset for next class if necessary)

Vocabulary
  • keyboard, drag, drop, open, folder

Materials:
  • computer lab
  • Recommendation: before you go to the lab with your students, have copies of the worksheets copied into your students’ folders. You may be able to ask your building Instructional Technology Specialist to do this for you.
  • Worksheet 1 classifies by number of dimensions
  • Worksheet 2 classifies by curved/straight edges/sides
  • Worksheet 3 classifies by vertices/no vertices

Procedure

  1. Have students open the worksheet(s) you wish them to complete.

  1. Read directions on the work sheet and demonstrate on the electronic whiteboard (SMART Board) how to click and drag the shapes and the names of the shapes.

  1. Have the students save the finished document to the desktop or student folder. (Optional: you may want to have the students print the completed worksheets as evidence of mastery. Make sure the students have typed their name in the text box at the top of the page before they print.)

Assessment: (Curriculum and Technology)
Math
  • This activity can be used as an assessment of students’ knowledge of geometric shapes and/or their ability to sort them by different attributes.
  • Correct completion of the worksheet is proof of mastery.
Technology
  • Observe students as they work on the activity to see if they have the computer skills necessary to complete the task.

Extension Activities: (Optional)
Delete heading on the worksheet and have students determine the trait by which they want to sort the geometric shapes (See Worksheet 4).
