Recognition Awards Program

The Association of California Nurse Leaders Recognition Awards Program is established to recognize excellence in nursing leadership. Outstanding leaders are recognized at the Awards Luncheon during our Annual Conference. Individuals are recognized in the following areas:

Selection Criteria for ACNL Awards

Two New Awards for 2017

Chapter Excellence Award: This award recognizes excellence at the chapter level. Examples include, but are not limited to: innovative marketing and membership recruitment and retention strategies; professional and leadership development programs for chapter members; collaboration/partnerships at the local, regional and/or national levels; creative programs and practices to promote membership involvement.
Emerging Nurse Leader Award: Awarded to an emerging nurse leader (less than two years in a formal leadership role) who has made a significant contribution to nursing leadership. Examples include, but are not limited to: innovation or performance improvement program with demonstrated outcomes; leadership role and/or positive contributions to ACNL – committee, chapter, Board of Directors, etc.; contributions to the nursing profession, patient care and/or the local community.
Best Practice Awards

Administration: This award is given to recognize, document and communicate best practices in Administration. Examples include, but are not limited to: leadership in clinical decision making, staff development, physician collaboration, nurse/family interaction, shared governance. Nominees should occupy a nurse management/administrator role.

Education: This award is given to recognize, document and communicate best practices in Education. Nominees should occupy a role in which they contribute to staff, patient or student education. This may include service or academic leaders. Examples include, but are not limited to: service-academia partnerships, excellence in educational program development or innovative education practice.

Clinical Practice: This award is given to recognize, document and communicate best practices in clinical nursing. Nominees should demonstrate leadership in improving clinical nursing practice. Examples include, but are not limited to: programs that promote professional nursing practice and impact direct care providers, or evidence-based practice research that is translated into clinical practice improvements.

Innovation in Professional Nursing: This award is given to recognize, document and communicate innovations in the delivery of patient care. Examples include, but are not be limited to: improvements in patient safety, workflow efficiency, staff satisfaction, quality outcomes and/or fiscal responsibility among staff.

Recruitment/Retention & Outreach: This award is given to recognize, document and communicate best practices in Recruitment/Retention & Outreach. Examples include, but are not limited to: recruitment & retention of ACNL members, nurses to the profession; or community outreach to promote the image and value of professional nursing.

Excellence in Nursing Research: Awarded to an ACNL nurse leader who has made significant contributions to research that expands the body of knowledge and supports evidence-based practice.

Excellence in Leadership Awards (North, Central, South, San Diego)

Awarded to an ACNL nurse leader from each geographic region that has made a significant contribution to nursing leadership. Examples include: support of a local ACNL chapter, hosting a local conference, holding key leadership roles within local chapters or regions.

Contributions as a Humanitarian Award:
Awarded to an ACNL nurse leader who has made significant contributions to the promotion of human welfare. Examples include: improvement of health services for those in need and advancement of humanitarian efforts through research, service and/or education.

Awards for Support of Professional Nursing:

Friend of Nursing: Awarded to an individual or organization demonstrating significant contributions and support for the nursing profession. Examples include: creation of a center of clinical excellence, funding support for nursing programs and/or projects or support of a professional organization that promotes Nursing.

Contribution to ACNL: Awarded to an ACNL nurse leader who has made significant contributions to the work, vision and mission of ACNL. Examples include members who have participated in a variety of roles to support ACNL such as past presidents, past board members, committee chairs and liaisons to an ACNL affiliate (CNSA, HealthImpact, CALNOC, Flo’s Cookie Jar, etc.)

General Selection Criteria for ACNL Awards

Each nomination will be rated, using a 5 point scale (5 being highest) using the following standards:

1.  Completeness of nomination received by the ACNL office on or before the due date of November 29, 2016.

2.  How the nominee is measured against the specific award category criteria based on examples.

Any member of the Association of California Nurse Leaders may submit nominations, using the 2016 Nomination Form. The selection process is accomplished through the Philanthropic, Recognition and Scholarship Committee, with Board of Directors’ approval.
