Troop 17 –Warmer Weather Weekend Camping Checklist

Please review Chapters 8 & 9 in your new Scout Handbook (12th edition). If you do not have some of the items listed below, instead of purchasing them, check with other members of your Patrol or Troop-there may not be a need to purchase the item(s).

Clothing (keeping dry & layering is the best way to keep warm)

-Hiking boots: sturdy, well broken in, waterproofed (important)

-Socks: one thin pair (polypropylene or equivalent) and two thick pair (wool or equivalent)-avoid cotton socks

-Underwear: 2 pair

-Long pants: 2 pair (avoid cotton if possible)

-Shirt: 1 long sleeved (avoid cotton)

-Fleece/sweatshirt: polyester or wool is best

-Gloves/cold weather hat: if conditions dictate

-Jacket: polyester or wool is best

-Rain gear: Be prepared

-Dirty clothes bag

Equipment (items should be in plastic bags to keep them dry)

-Backpack or large sports equipment bag to hold your items *(see note)

-Day Pack for day hikes to hold: water bottles, rain gear, pocketknife, flashlight, first aid kit, snacks, matches & fire starters in waterproof container, extra clothing, man & compass, plastic bag/cover for pack

-Sleeping bag: 20-40 degree bag in a waterproof bag (a heavy duty trash bag works great)

-Sleeping pad: at least 1 inch thick

-bungy cords

-Spare heavy duty trash bag

-2 Filled Water bottle (1 liter bottle, or if possible, 2 liter bottles)

-Personal First Aid Kit: see your Scout Handbook

-Mess Kit: consider using a Tupperware container with top

-Eating utensils

-Heavy duty plastic mug (for hot or cold drinks)

-Watch (if you have one)

-Flashlight or headlamp with spare batteries

-Toiletry kit (tooth brush, tooth paste, hand towel, biodegradable soap, etc.)

-Toilet paper in a ziplock bag

-Handkerchief

-Folding knife: 2 ½ inch blade or less (sheath knives are not allowed)

-Totin’ Chip card if you want to use a knife, axe and/or saw

-Matches in a waterproof container (Firem’n Chit if you want to use matches and/or be a Fire Marshall)

-Folding Chair

-Scout Handbook/note pad/pen or pencil in a ziplock bag

-Sunscreen (non aerosol)

Optional Equipment

-Bible, prayer book (in ziplock bag)

-Compass (speak to the SPL or other Scout Leaders for suggestions)

-Camera

-Fishing gear & bait

-Nature books (in ziplock bag)

-Musical instrument

*Eventually Scouts will see the benefit of using a backpack. Initially, do not go out and purchase one-see about borrowing one. There are many different types/styles/costs of backpacks. Scouts need to feel comfortable with and wearing the backpack. It is helpful to use different types before purchasing a new one.
