Treating people badly

There are 7 ways in which people can be treated badly

These are;

  1. Neglect
  2. Rejection
  3. Hostility
  4. Punishment
  5. Unfair discrimination
  6. Bullying
  7. Violence

Can you identify which of these match the following definitions?

Rejection / This happens when a person is shunned by another.
Violence / This is when physical harm is done to a person
Neglect / This is when someone is not being cared for properly
Hostility / This is when there is a bad feeling between two people and they can’t get on
Bullying / This is deliberate harmful behaviour over a period of time
Unfair discrimination / This is when a person is treated differently on the basis of their gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, social class, age and impairment
Punishment / This is what is used when a person has not done what they should have done

Now see if you can identify any of the seven in the following scenarios. Don’t forget to identify the sentence in your answer.

  1. Peter

Peter lives in a children’s home. He is very unhappy there because one of the care staff (Oliver) is not treating Peter well. Oliver has been hittingPeter.Peter has bruises on his arms.

Violence

  1. Martha and Bertie

Martha and Bertie are twins. They live with their mother who has 2 new babies to look after. Martha and Bertie are dirty and always hungry because their mother does not feed them regular meals or care about their hygiene.

Neglect

  1. Jayne does not like the lady (Barbara) who delivers the meals on wheels. Barbara is rude and nasty to Jayne and this makes Jayne be nasty and rude back. It has got so bad that Jayne has decided that she would rather go hungry than continue seeing Barbara each day.

Hostility

  1. Michael hates going to the day care centre because for the past 6 months, one of the carers has been calling him names.

Bullying

  1. Cassie started a new school 4 weeks ago and is having difficulty settling into the school. None of the girls will talk to her because she is newand she feels very lonely during lessons and at dinner time.

Rejection

  1. Stephan lives on the streets. He has heard that a charity will give people hot meals each day and he would love to eat something warm for a change. However, he doesn’t think it is worth him walking the 6 miles to get there as he knowsthey will not feed him once they find out he is Polish.

Unfair discrimination

  1. Alison has been sent to her bedroom for hitting her little brother. Her mother had warned Alison that she must stop hitting baby Sidney but Alison thought her mother couldn’t see what Alison was doing. Alison is now very sorry because she can’t watch The Simpsons on television.

Punishment

Now look at the following and identify the ways that Poppy has been mistreated.

Poppy is not happy. Her mother has been taken into hospital and everyone seems to have forgotten about her. The social worker said she would collect Poppy at 10am on Wednesday but it is now Thursday. There is no food in the house and no-one to look after Poppy who is very hungry and needs a wash and clean clothes. The man next door keeps shouting through the letter box calling her names because her mother is not married, he has been doing this ever since Christmas (6 months ago). Poppy doesn’t know what to do. She could call her grandma, but she knows she would be angrywith her because they don’t get on. The worst thing is that she has dropped a vase on the floor and she knows her mother will smack her for being so clumsy.
