The last date for entry into programmes leading to this qualification is 31 December 2018.

The last date for assessments to take place forthis qualification is 31 December 2019 when the qualification will be discontinued.

People currently working towards this qualification may either complete the requirements by 31 December 2019 or transfer their results to the replacement qualification.

Purpose

This qualification covers skills and knowledgethat contribute to running an efficient and profitable furniture manufacturing operation as well as advanced technical skills in furniture making. On completion candidates will understand how to cost jobs and manage stock levels. They will also have a range of advanced expertise in the technical area they specialise in. However, candidates who choose to complete the Furniture Design and Markets strand will be introduced to non-technical knowledge and skills that contribute to the success of a furniture manufacturing operation.

The core section of this qualification covers job costing and purchasing of materials and hardware. The strands allow candidates to specialise their skills in an area of the furniture industry that is most suited to their role and workplace.

This qualification follows on from the National Certificate in Furniture (Level3) with strands in Finishing, Machine Operator, Free Standing Furniture, Frame Making, Upholstery, Upholstery Cutting, and Upholstery Sewing [Ref:1503]. People who complete this qualification may wish to continue onto the National Certificate in Competitive Manufacturing (Level4) [Ref:1216] or theNational Diploma in Design with strands in Graphic Design, Product Design, and Spatial Design [Ref:0567].

Replacement Information

This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Furniture (Restoration and Recovery Upholstery) (Level4) [Ref:0623], the National Certificate in Furniture Finishing (Level4) [Ref:1181], and the National Certificate in Furniture Making (Level4) [Ref:0091].

Special Notes

  • People completing the Furniture Design and Markets strand must have completed the National Certificate in Furniture (Level3) [Ref:1503], or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
  • People completing the Craft Finisherstrand must have completed the National Certificate in Furniture (Level3) with strand in Finishing [Ref:1503], or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
  • People completing the Machine Setterstrand must have completed the National Certificate in Furniture (Level3) with strand in Machine Operator[Ref:1503], or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
  • People completing the Furniture Makerstrand must have completed the National Certificate in Furniture (Level3) with a strand in Free Standing Furniture [Ref:1503], or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
  • People completing the Advanced Upholstery strand must have completed the National Certificate in Furniture (Level3) with strand in Upholstery [Ref:1503], or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. It is recommended that candidates also have achieved prior award of the Level 3 qualification with strands in Upholstery Cutting and/or Upholstery Sewing.

Version 1 of this qualification was republished to update the Furniture Qualifications Overview diagram, following the removal of the Interior Fitments strand from National Certificate in Furniture (Level 3) with strands in Finishing, Machine Operator, Free Standing Furniture, Frame Making, Upholstery, Upholstery Cutting, and Upholstery Sewing [Ref: 1503].

This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Furniture (Restoration and Recovery Upholstery) (Level4) [Ref:0623], the National Certificate in Furniture Finishing (Level4) [Ref:1181], and the National Certificate in Furniture Making (Level4) [Ref:0091].

There are substantial differences between the new and replaced qualifications.

The last date for entry in to programmes of study leading towards any of the replaced qualifications is 31 December 2009. People currently enrolled in programmes of study leading towards the National Certificate in Furniture Finishing (Level4) [Ref:1181] have until 31 December 2013 to complete the assessment requirements for that qualification. People currently enrolled in programmes of study leading towards either the National Certificate in Furniture (Restoration and Recovery Upholstery) (Level4) [Ref:0623] or the National Certificate in Furniture Making (Level4) [Ref:0091] have until 31 December 2014 to complete the assessment requirements for that qualification.

The replaced qualifications will continue to be recognised by industry and there is no requirement for existing holders to complete the new qualifications.

This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards – see table below.
