Procurement Management
In their projection for the year 2032 "80:20 Procurement and supply towards CIPS Centenary. What do the next two decades hold for the profession?" [1], The UK's Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply predict "procurement professionals must become experts: respected; influential; persuasive; visionary; strategic; sharp; global; collaborative; executive and business savvy. We need to develop a new definition of ‘expert’, where the new supply professionals will be ‘students of their own industry’. They will know everything about it, from the science, economics, law and politics of their supply markets on a global scale. […] We also predict that the profession will have to work in an age where the global centre of gravity has shifted from west to east, in an age when China and India will be powerful consumer markets in their own right. The role of the procurement professional will be to secure supply into, as well as from, those nations, as well as offering expertise and cultural awareness to sales-focused areas of business. "
The role of the procurement professional is becoming more strategic and central to the role of the organisation. It will become even more important as major trends start to hit procurement, including increased Corporate Social Responsibility, technological advances, global geo-political and macro-economic change, changing demographics, and a shift in the economic centre of gravity.
This module delivers an eclectic mix of ten core topics that will be fundamental in procurement management in the next 20 years.
Global Logistics
This module provides the student with a critical understanding of the role global logistics plays in global supply chain management. It will cover the practical implications of delivering and receiving shipments across national borders; such issues as transportation means and methods, INCOTERMS® and shipping documents, custom clearance. International Strategic Management
As international business has grown and developed, the companies which engage in it have developed different organisational forms and international business strategies to gain competitive advantage. With the advent of globalisation, companies are now developing into global enterprises and seeking to develop strategies which will give them global competitive advantage. This module aims to facilitate an understanding of the development of International enterprises and the strategies available to such firms to manage and control their operations against the background of a dynamic global business environment.
Global Sourcing
Many organisations strive to harness the potential benefits of global sourcing in order to reduce cost, increase efficiency and improve effectiveness. It is therefore commonplace to find global sourcing initiatives and programmes as part of the supply and procurement strategies of transnational corporations. These strategies go much further than the priority to create value and efficiency in trading relationships and incorporate critical activities like environmental monitoring, political and country risk assessment, and strategic efforts to influence conditions and form strong and flexible partnerships with supply chain actors. The aim of this module is to provide a solid and critical understanding of the fundamental principles of sourcing goods and services across geopolitical boundaries.
