Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of diving physiology; demonstrate diver rescue skills; and use supplemental oxygen supply during diver rescues.

Entry information
Critical health and safety prerequisites / Unit 4384, Scuba dive and perform rescues in open water to a maximum depth of 18 metres, and proof of 20 logged dives showing experience in navigation, and deep and night diving, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

Explanatory notes

1 Industry technical and safety criteria refer to dive instruction, supervision and performance being carried out in accordance with the standards, procedures and training materials of the respective dive training agency. The agency must meet or exceed the World Recreational Scuba Training Council training standards.

2 Acceptable unit standards that can contribute to the prerequisite of proof of 20 logged dives are: Unit 4385, Navigate prescribed routes underwater; Unit 4386, Complete computer-aided dives; Unit 4388, Complete a night dive; Unit 4389, Take still photographs underwater; Unit 4390, Complete an underwater video; Unit 4391, Complete a dry suit dive; Unit 4392, Complete drift dives on SCUBA; Unit 4395, Dive at an altitude greater than 300 metres; Unit 4397, Complete dives using a diver propulsion vehicle; Unit 4400, Identify marine species at a dive site; Unit 4401, Hunt and collect preselected objects underwater; Unit 4402, Complete a dive off a boat; and Unit 4403, Complete a shore dive.

3 All workplace diving practice must comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, and the Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995. All practice must also comply with the Accident Compensation Act 2001 and the Guidelines for Occupational Diving 2004 http://www.business.govt.nz/worksafe.

4 All training providers assessing against any instruction diving unit standard must ensure that the training is conducted by a qualified instructor currently registered with one of the listed agencies: National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), Scuba Schools International (SSI), Confédération Mondiale des Activitiés Subaquatiques (CMAS), International Diving Educators Association (IDEA), or an equivalent, determined by Skills Active Aotearoa Limited, that meets the requirements of the World Recreational Scuba Training Council (WRSTC), the instructor must provide training in accordance with the standards and procedures of the respective training agency.

5 The buddy system is where scuba divers dive in pairs while maintaining contact with each other at all times.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of diving physiology.

Evidence requirements

1.1 The effects on divers of partial and/or changing pressure are described.

Range nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, toxicity, absorption.

1.2 The mechanisms for treating dive related problems are described according to industry criteria.

Range near drowning, hypothermia, cramps, exhaustion, decompression illnesses, panic, barotrauma, shallow water blackout, nitrogen narcosis, contaminated air.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate diver rescue skills.

Evidence requirements

2.1 First aid is administered according to standards issued by WorkSafe NewZealand for simulated dive incidents.

Range near drowning, hypothermia, hyperthermia, cramps, exhaustion, decompression illnesses, panic, barotraumas, shallow water blackout, nitrogen narcosis, contaminated air, minor aquatic life injuries, respiratory and cardiac arrest.

2.2 Rescues of self and buddy are demonstrated according to standards issued by WorkSafe New Zealand in a simulated situation.

Range ascent, searches, equipment removal, rescue breathing, tows, calling expert assistance, exits, cardiopulmonary resuscitation first aid.

Outcome 3

Use supplemental oxygen during diver rescues.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Prepared oxygen equipment meets industry technical and safety criteria.

Range demand valve and/or free flow systems, selection of face masks, fitting regulator to cylinder, flow rates.

3.2 Oxygen use complies with the standards specified in the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996.

Range equipment modifications, explosion, fire, handling, charging, testing.

3.3 The administration of supplemental oxygen complies with industry technical and safety criteria.
