Scholarships

As reported in newsletter three, Xiao-Wu Chen (USTC Hefei) and Qunhua Liu (Tsinghua University) have won scholarships. The three winners not yet reported are:

Bo Chen: Born in Liaoning in 5/1978, BSc at Liaoning Normal University and MSc at Beijing Normal University, where he is now a first year graduate student. His Chinese supervisor is Bangming Deng (Beijing Normal), his European supervisor is Claus Michael Ringel (Bielefeld). He has been winning a number of awards both at Liaoning Normal and at Beijing Normal. He is working in representation theory of algebras and applications to quantum groups.

Jue Le: Born in Nanjing in 9/1977, BSc and MSc at Yangzhou University, now first year graduate student at Beijing Normal University. Her Chinese supervisor is Changchang Xi (Beijing Normal), her European supervisor will be either Henning Krause (Paderborn) or Claus Michael Ringel (Bielefeld). She has been wining several awards at Yangzhou University. She has co-authored three articles on the structure theory of Hopf algebras and will now work in representation theory of algebras and applications to topology.

Dong Yang: Born in Shandong province in 1/1981, BA at Tsinghua University, now second year graduate student at Tsinghua University. His Chinese supervisor is Jie Xiao (Tsinghua), his European supervisor is Steffen Koenig (Leicester). He has been winning a scholarship at Tsinghua University. He has expertise in number theory and in algebra and is now working in representation theory of algebras and applications to Lie theory.

Training missions and workshop

Due to SARS, a number of training missions had to be postponed and should be rescheduled as soon as possible. In addition, Jie Xiao and Bangming Deng both are planning to visit European partners in the coming academic year. Information about all travel plans for the second year should now be sent to the co-ordinator of the project.

The partners have agreed to postpone the international workshop to the project’s third year.

Summer school and graduate course

A summer school on Lie algebras and their representations has been organised and run by the Leicester team, see

At Leicester a graduate course has now started on Hall algebras, see
