Take Part in a World Environmental Chronology

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the International Editorial Committee for the World Environmental Chronology (IECWEC), it is my pleasure and privilege to announce the launching of the World Environmental Chronology (WEC, to be published in English), initiated by the leading universities and researchers of the East Asian Countries and region, China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan in the field of social sciences and humanities.

The World Environmental Chronology is designed to be a collective handbook written in English on the environmental chronology of individual countries from the industrial revolution to the first decade of the 21st century. This project aims to publish of high quality chronology on specific topics in environmental problems and on a broad range of environmental issues of each country around the world. Prior to the World Environmental Chronology, a group of Japanese researchers published in November 2010 another collective book, General Environmental chronology: Japan and the world (Japanese version), which has been initiated by promising Japanese researchers who are mainly engaged in environmental sociology and environmental history. The World Environmental Chronology will succeed to affluent information in General Environmental chronology: Japan and the world (Japanese version), translate them in English, and collect additional information about countries which are not described in the Japanese version. Also, WEC is a core project of Hosei Institute for Sustainability Research and Education, an interdisciplinary research institution, is designed to merge an outcome of broader knowledge of sciences and humanities in the academic community.

The International Editorial Committee for the World Environmental Chronology, the IECWEC, recruits new contributors all over the world who can undertake the task of collecting information concerning environmental problems and policies in their own country. Especially, the IECWEC encourages any young researchers to participate as prospective authors and contributors in this project.

Features

The World Environmental Chronology contains 4 parts to enhance importance of the following main environmental issues; 1) pollution; 2) global environmental problems such as climate change and depletion of the ozone layer etc.; 3) biodiversity and natural resource conservation; 4) occupational disease and hazards; 5) environmental movement and policy; 6) cooperation and conflict between societies.

Working Committee

Along with the IECWEC, the working committee for publishing environmental chronologies has been formed by academic researchers of the social sciences and humanities. The secretariat of this project joins in the working committee, and is situated at the Hosei Institute for Sustainability Research and Education, in Japan.

Hosei Institute for Sustainability Research and Education

Hosei Institute for Sustainability Research and Education in Tokyo, Japan, was launched by Hosei University, in August 2009 with the appointment of the director, Professor Funabashi. This Institute, a progressive interdisciplinary research institution, has won various research funds and supplied all necessary funding for this chronology project by regarding the publications of chronologies as a core project of the institution. Working closely with the International Editorial Committee, the secretariat and the working committee work on all chronology projects. The major members of the secretariat have been employed as post-docs at the Hosei Institute.
