Suggested training experiences that MCH Training Programs may want to use to reinforce the MCH Leadership Competencies.

Examples of Training Experiences
- Review historical articles and presentations (Roots article, Hutchins; MCH History PowerPoints, UAB)
- Review web site overview of public health (e.g., www.asph.org , What is Public Health?)
- Policy Analysis
- Write a brief about an emerging local MCH public health issue
- Attend a meeting of a local MCH stakeholder group, provide a written summary of their approach
- Become familiar with state-specific information on the Title V Information web site, in order to: 1) describe a state's plan to achieve one or more of the 18 National Performance measures or 2) identify the empirical basis (from needs assessment) for one state-specific performance measure.
- Observe a Title V MCH Block Grant Review
- Become involved, from a provider/stakeholder perspective, with the Title V MCH Block Grant 5-year needs assessment.
Self Reflection
Experiences
1. Readings on self-reflection and potential self-improvement strategies

Ethics and Professionalism
Examples of Training Experiences
1. Draft scenarios that illustrate practices that do not recognize social, moral, and ethical values as opposed to those that do.
2. Read articles recommended by faculty on ethical issues.
3. Observe faculty negotiate ethical dilemmas in clinical practice, in research, in teaching and in administering a program.
4. Participate in solving ethical dilemmas in clinical practice, in research, in teaching and in administering a program.
5. Be evaluated by faculty in solving ethical dilemmas in clinical practice, in research, in teaching and in administering a program.
6. Develop an IRB proposal and outline why the subject should be raised to an IRB.
7. Pass a test on HIPAA.
Negotiation and Conflict Resolution
Examples of Training Experiences
1. Develops persuasive case for policy implementation in MCH field collating evidence, addressing possible objections, and developing sequential action steps
2. Goes through exercise where argues one side of controversial position and then is able to effectively take the opposing view
3. Identifies motivation and what are the near and long term interests of opposing sides in sample conflicts e.g. vaccination of all children for childhood diseases, early screening of children for rare disorders, etc
4. Reads and discusses Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving in” by Ury, Fischers and Patton (1991).
5. Analyses case study of opposing positions such as Special Education dispute, or resource allocation example to break down respective positions, motivations, desired outcomes and possible alternative solutions.
Cultural Competence
Training Experiences
1. Identify of the diverse cultural values and traditions in a community
2. Conduct self-assessments to monitor own progress (discusses self-assessments and progress with supervisors)

5. Analyze models of service delivery and data collection activities that assure maximum participation or maximum representation of diverse communities in the design, receipt or delivery of health services or in a public health assessment.
6. Conduct an interview of a family or patient from a different cultural background
7. Assessment of own cultural history and beliefs through the creation of a cultural portfolio. Activities might include research and family interviews.

Examples of Training Experiences
1. Outline the essential maternal child health services in a state, identifying the disciplines and organizations involved
2. Identify current issues in the legislation and regulation of the US MCH system
3. Map the organizational relationships in the delivery of health care in a community, including networks for addressing continuity of care
4. Explain the roles of the public and private sector in meeting health needs and priorities
5. Prepare a program budget for a project or program area
6. Identify individual, organizational and community concerns, needs, assets and resources for public health interventions and programs
7. Prepare proposals for funding from internal or external sources
8. Solicit ideas and opinions from others in formulating and justifying a decision.
9. Provide examples of visions, missions and core values for an organization and how they align or not align with that organization’s behavior or actions.
10. Participate in a team project to plan, development, budget, and evaluate a community initiative within an organizational

5. Provide written and oral testimony to the state legislature.
6. Write an OP/ED article on an MCH topic.
7. Observe a legislative hearing on CSPAN, or if possible, attend a legislative hearing on an MCH topic.
8. Track a bill over the Internet over the course of a legislative session.
9. Interview an agency or organization-based MCH policy maker, administrator, or advocate and prepare a report and oral presentation. Present written and oral mock testimony from the perspective of the agency/association interviewed
