Trail Bits End of Summer 2017

Pete Friedlieb

The days were shortening, and the eclipse had passed as your Board of nordic ski students trooped into the classroom at KAXE.Before the school year could begin, there were stories to share. And what did you do on your summer vacation?

First up was Boomer. He was hard at pursuing his goal of visiting every brewpub in the U.S.And he was working hard indeed but he kept falling behind.Seems that new pubs were springing up faster than he could jump in the car and get out to visit. But a happy problem for Boomer, as in grooming, the work is never really finished.Next Catherine. She had been walking the hills and trails of Mt. Itasca to clear away twigs, acorns andmaking it all look like a green carpet. After all the new Pisten Bully they had purchased for use out there had to be kept as pristine as possible. And then Rick. His baby, Legion Trails, needed regular inspection and checking.Somehow Rick was able to do this while lying on his back and trying to make out animals in the clouds above.Talented he is.Next Craig S.Hehad been developing a new mathematics. It was complex and well over everyone’s head but had something to do with acceleration down a hill with a curve at the end and the critical radius of large tree near the bottom leading to the mathematical likelihood of...... (well we won't go there.)And Randy had gone through his 14th set of Legos as he trying to replicate the Glensheen mansion complete with gardens.Aaah the ambition of an engineer. And so it went.We barely had time for business but we eventually got to it.

Suomi Bridge Project-The Forest Service had determined that the bridge near Lawrence Lake at South Suomi was hazardous but with the shortfall of funds, due to firefighting and politics, rebuilding a sturdy replacement would take much time.By volunteering to tear down the bridge and help build a new one Club volunteers were able to move this project forward.

New Snowmobile for Suomi has arrived!Randy is happy and ready to give up the Legos for a chance to give it a ride on the snow.

Sugar Hills-We are gearing up for fund raising to erect a badly needed storage building with a warming space for the public. We really would appreciate some help from volunteers to help plan and raise funds for this building. Please contact me if you can help —.

Sugar Hills Trail Clearing-Boomer will get this organized when he gets back from the brew pub tour.We need some work to get this ready for ski season so stay tuned for the announcement of the date.

Other Trails-There’s ongoing work at Blueberry, Legion, Joyce Estate others wishing the county. All are generally in good shape.

Your weary board then left the studios with a bunch of homework!Dang!!
