Towards clean, safe and sustainable city logistics
21st February 2012
Polis office, 98 rue du Trône, Brussels
Chairs: Sylvain Haon (Polis) and Gianfranco Burzio (CRF)
9.30 - Welcome and objectives of the meeting, Sylvain Haon, Polis
9.45 - European initiatives for urban freight delivery, European Commission
10.00 CityMove project, introduction and overview of progresses, Gianfranco Burzio, CRF
CityMove works at the development of an innovative vehicle for urban freight delivery. It reconsiders logistics operations, the whole vehicle architecture, its propulsion (considering hybrid and full electric options), and various benefits from technology.
10.20 Report on the results of the first user group meeting, Sylvain Haon, Polis
10.40 - CityLog, Lina Konstantinopolus, ERTICO
The Citylog projects aims to contribute to the improvement of the overall city logistics efficiency through a combination of several measures:
§ Technology (Info-telematic support functionalities)
§ Process review (Vehicle-to-vehicle transhipment,new load units)
CityLog works on optimized trip planner, ad hoc map attributes for commercial vehicles, dynamic navigation services and last mile parcel tracking.
It considers low environmental impact and safe vehicles, looking at complementary set of vehicles to implement the “Freight bus” concept, on-board telematics for clean and efficient mobility and safety and maneuvering support systems.
CityLog also integrate Logistic model & load units such as New compact container and Mobile automatic pack stations (BentoBox)
11.00 – TNT in Citylog, Wim Deloof TNT Global Express S.p.A. Strategic Operations Development Manager
11.20 – coffee break
11.40 – Better understanding new urban freight vehicles operations, Volvo
CityMove has carried a detailed analysis of user needs and functional requirements, gathering data from administrators, freight carriers, manufacturers, residents, etc. This has allowed drawing conclusions on the vehicle concepts requirements and on the urban freight delivery system as a whole.
CityMove also ran a simulation tool and models to test the new vehicle concepts and compare with traditional ones in different situation in the urban context.
The new vehicle concepts resulting from these analyses identified four key items:
- Safety for vulnerable road users;
- Emissions and noise reduction;
- Energy saving;
- Flexible multi usage truck, able to handle dry and refrigerated goods in the same time with easy access to goods.
Followed by a consultation of the participants
12.40 - lunch
14.00 – Urban Vehicle design for greater efficiency, CRF
Presentation of the state of play in CityMove in the definition, design and development of solutions for greater efficiency:
- Modular urban architecture for the vehicle;
- Integrated energy management logics and systems;
- Innovative ecological hybrid driveline;
- Innovative body with two compartments with regulated temperature, allowing to load frozen and dry goods;
- new technologies for fuel economy and eco-compatibility in refrigerated goods delivery (CC)
- Application of CO2 refrigerating fluid (environment friendly solution) with a high effect on the greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
Followed by a consultation of the participants
15.00 – Greater safety of all users on the road with advanced urban freight vehicles and operations
· Predictive anti-rollover functionality for Urban Goods delivery Trucks
· Pedestrian / vulnerable-user protection functionality for Urban Goods delivery Trucks
· Collision avoidance - Driver assistance functionality for Urban Goods delivery Trucks
Followed by a consultation of the participants
16.00 - Overview of other relevant initiatives on urban freight delivery and opportunities for further activities in 2012, Polis
16.30 – End of the meeting
Each consultation of the participants will be supported by a specific questionnaire which will facilitate the exchange.
It will follow a presentation of the CityMove project on the specific approach and achievement of the projects on the topic addressed.
