ADMISSIONS INFORMATION

The sequence for applying for college is:

1. Apply to be accepted in the college. YOU SHOULD DO THIS BY THANKSGIVING. Early admissions is offered at many colleges. The CounselingCenter has applications to most colleges in Indiana. Submit completed applications to the Counseling Center. If you use an online application, follow the instructions and be sure to print any forms you need to have sent to the college. You will still need to request a transcript be sent by the CounselingCenter and you will have to send in your application fee.

2. Apply for housing - you must first be accepted to the college or university in order to be put on their list for housing.

3. Apply for financial aid at the college.

4. File the FAFSA in Jan./Feb. – it must be received by March 10 in order to receive Indiana money. Apply for a PIN number at week or more before completing the FAFSA online. Applying online is encouraged.

Some colleges offer early admissions for strong students. Before you apply for early admissions be sure you check what kind of commitment you would be making.

COLLEGE VISITATION POLICY

Students are allowed to take a total of three days to visit colleges during their Junior or Senior years. Students must make their own arrangements with the college’s office of admissions for an appointment. After the appointment is made the student must get a Field Trip form from the Attendance Office or the CounselingCenter, and have each teacher, plus a parent and their counselor, sign the form. The form must be turned in to the Attendance Office at least two days before the visit. The student must give the attendance office a written statement from the college confirming the visit in order to have the absence excused. Otherwise the absence will be unexcused. This written statement should be given to the Attendance Office the day after the visit. No college visit will be approved during the last week of a nine weeks, during final exams, or after the first Friday in May, unless initiated by the college for testing/registration purposes. EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY MAY BE APPROVED ONLY BY AN ADMINISTRATOR.

Many colleges visit New CastleHigh School during the school day. Colleges visiting NCHS during the week will be announced on Monday. Students wanting to meet with the college representative must get a pass from their counselor before the day of the visit. Teachers may or may not honor the pass.

Scholarships

Scholarships are announced on the daily announcements and on the bulletin boards. Students must be alert and follow directions when applying for scholarships. Scholarships announced in this fashion last year are listed on the senior bulletin board. Most applications for scholarships offered locally will be available, and due, in March. Mr. Tucker will give the seniors a local scholarship packet in February.

A general scholarship application is available on the High School Website. This application is used for approximately 80 local scholarships. You can save yourself time later by completing this form NOW and saving it on a disc.

FEDERAL/STATE GRANTS AND LOANS

1. Fill out the FAFSA in January or early February (not before Jan. 1). Complete your tax returns first, if possible.

2. The federal processor must receive the FAFSA by March 10 in order to receive Indiana money. Some colleges require it to be sent earlier. Check your college catalogues for their deadlines. Make copies of all applications and your tax forms.

3. After you send the FAFSA application you will receive the SAR report. Check to be sure that all items on it are correct

4. Re-apply for financial aid each year you are in college through the college’s financial aid office.

5. The phone number for the State Student Assistance Commission (SSACI), which administers scholarships, grants, and loans from the State of Indiana, is 317-232-2350.

SAT TIPS

1. One point is given for every right answer. One-fourth of a point is taken off for every wrong answer.

2. Don’t randomly guess.

3. If you can’t decide what the right answer is, don’t answer the question and go on. If you have time, return to unanswered questions and, if you can narrow the choices down to 2 possibilities, guess.

4. Don’t get discouraged. It is supposed to be a very tough test.
