Tough Arabic Letters- out line

Introduction: (1m)

This lesson is meant to be taught directly after the class has learned the whole alphabet, as it puts it in context. The students listen to the letters from several speakers:
1st: from me, a native Arabic speaker
2nd: from a non-native Arabic speaker on the video clip
3rd: from each other, through mypeer.

I will introduce minimal pairs of words that contain these sounds in the target language.I will use hand outs of each group of letters to be as references to the students. The letters and minimal pairs will be introduced through power point presentation or the hand outs and there will be a video clip at the end summarizing the lesson.

Activities:(30 sec.)

- Introducing both the easy and heavy lettersthrough drilling and repetition.

- Comparing between the light letters and heavy ones.

- Listening:Students has to circle the right word that they hear.

Pair work:one student says the word and his colleague circle it.” For higher levels”

A) Light Arabic letters :( 30 sec.)

They are the letters that are existed and used in English. They originate from within the mouth and not deep from within the throught.

) ت – ث – د – ز – س- ك – هـ = (t – th – d – z- s- k- h

Heavy sounds: (30 sec.) the Arabic letters that do not exist in English ح – ذ – ط – ظ – ص – ض – ق))

Compare heavy to light sounds: (1M)

One of the trickiest sounds for the English speakers (ح ) : (30 sec.)

Compare ( ح ) to (هـ ) and ( ح ) to ( خ ). Students read clockwise direction

from the top left:

ح / هـ
خ / ح

Compare ( ظ ) to (ز ) and ( ظ ) to ( ذ ). Students read clockwise direction

from the top left:

ظ / ذ
ز / ظ

Glottalstop:’hamza’ (ء) : (30 sec.)

أ إ أَ أ ئ ؤ

Minimal pairs of words that contain these sounds& drills: “in the hand out.”(2m)

If I implementthis lesson again, Iwillpresent the video clip differently. I will just begin it from the comparing between the light and heavy letters.

The video link : (2m)

*Total time: introduction (1m) - activities (30 sec.)- Light letters (30 sec.) – heavy letters (30 sec.) – compare light &heavy (30 sec.) – (ح) 30 sec. – (ظ) 1m. –(ء) 30 sec. – minimal pairs and drills (2m) – video (2m) = (9 m) plus 5m for discussion. (1m) in case I need it.

A list of the materials;

I will use my PC laptop. I will do the hand outs and the copies and bring them with me.

I need a projector, markers and speakers.

Best regards
