JOB TITLE: General Manager

SUPERVISES: Personnel Manager, Stage Manager, Librarian and Venue and Production Staff

JOB SUMMARY:

The General Manager is responsible for ensuring that the scheduling and production of all Association events (concerts, rehearsals & special events) run smoothly, effectively, and in a financially responsible manner. The General Manager administers the planning and management of guest artists and repertoire, and serves as the principal liaison with artist agencies regarding contracting within budget parameters. The General Manager also functions as a liaison between the orchestra and the rest of the Association, and is responsible for carrying out many provisions in the master agreement. Additionally, the General Manager assists the Chief Executive Officer with any and all administrative duties as requested. The ideal candidate will have experience in full indoor/outdoor concert production.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Concert Production

· With the PSA Music Director, Principal Guest Conductor, Principal Pops Conductor and Chief Executive Officer, determine programming, assist in the selection of guest artists and guest conductors, create and update calendar of rehearsals, concerts and other services.

· With all Guest Conductors and in close coordination with PSA Music Director and Chief Executive Officer, determine programming as well as assist in the selection of guest artists.

· Plan and administer all concert production activities of the Association, including facility and

equipment rental, staging, lighting, sound requirements, and other logistical arrangements.

· Coordinate activities with library, personnel, and artistic staff.

· Supervise setup for rehearsals and concerts and coordinate with artistic staff

regarding special setup requirements.

· Arrive backstage early to check all preparations, inform appropriate personnel

of any last-minute changes, and determine actual starting time of concerts.

· Confirm arrangements with recording engineer for any taping of concerts.

· Oversee guest artist hospitality.

Scheduling

· Prepare the Association’s master schedule by working with the Chief Executive Officer and all appropriate artistic staff to achieve artistic goals while maximizing services for financial benefit and upholding the requirements of the master agreement and other Association parameters.

· Determine feasible schedules for special events such as tours, recordings, and outreach programs.

· Book all necessary facilities.

Master Agreement/Contracts

· Serve as a member of management's negotiating team for collective bargaining agreements.

· Research specific issues as requested by the negotiating team; determine financial impact of

proposed changes.

· Propose changes to agreements and strategies for achieving and implementing those changes.

· Interpret, implement, and uphold terms of the master agreement and other collective bargaining

agreements; research background and precedent where discrepancies in interpretation occur.

· Incorporate new terms of agreements in all scheduling and logistical planning; monitor

compliance.

Orchestra & Artistic Personnel

· Meet with the Players’ Committee to share information and discuss issues of concern; respond

to orchestra member requests for information on scheduling and working conditions.

· Follow up on all requests in a timely manner; help promote positive relations between

all artistic personnel and the Association.

· Ensure best possible physical working conditions for all artistic personnel in all situations.

Administrative

· Develop and monitor budgets for all artistic & production activities.

· Maintain appropriate cost controls while maintaining artistic integrity and upholding the master

agreement.

· Hire, train, manage, and evaluate performance of all artistic & production support staff.

· Manage procurement of supplies, licenses, equipment, and services for operational purposes.

Maintain inventories of property and supplies, making periodic checks for reports to the

Chief Executive Officer.

· Serve as part of senior management team to assist the Chief Executive Officer in setting and

implementing administrative and artistic policies established by the Board of Directors.

· Work closely with the Chief Executive Officer and other designated staff in long-range planning for the Association; prepare budget projections as needed.

· Coordinate with the artistic staff in planning programs.

· Serve as spokesperson for the Association as requested by the Chief Executive Officer.

· Assist Chief Executive Officer with any and all administrative duties as requested.

Other

· Coordinate logistical arrangements for all special events and projects.

· Coordinate production requirements, timings, and special needs for broadcasts.

· Serve as liaison to record producers and engineers to arrange schedule and technical requirements for recording sessions.

· Coordinate activities of Development and Marketing& Public Relations departments for special

projects involving use of the performance spaces, stage crew, and/or artistic personnel.

· Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.

The Pasadena Symphony and POPS is an ensemble of Southern California’s most talented, sought after musicians. With extensive credits in the film, television, recording and orchestral industry, the artists of Pasadena Symphony and POPS are the most heard in the world.

In the fall of 2007, the Pasadena Symphony incorporated the Pasadena POPS into its Association under the new name Pasadena Symphony and POPS. This merger created an expanded Classics and POPS series providing the community with a full spectrum of live symphonic concerts year-round.

The Pasadena Symphony provides a musical experience like no other at the Ambassador Auditorium – known as the Carnegie Hall of the West. Internationally recognized, Grammy-nominated conductor David Lockington, serves as the Pasadena Symphony Association’s Music Director with performance-practice specialist Nicholas McGegan serving as Principal Guest Conductor. The Pasadena POPS welcomes the multi-platinum-selling, two-time Emmy and five-time Grammy Award-nominated entertainer dubbed “The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” Michael Feinstein as its Principal Pops Conductor, to succeed Marvin Hamlisch in the newly created Marvin Hamlisch Chair. The Pasadena POPS’ summer home is the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.

A hallmark of its robust education programs, the Pasadena Symphony Association has served the youth of the region since 1972 through the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestras comprised of over 2500 gifted 4-12th grade students from more than 50 schools all over the Southland. The PYSO often performs on popular television show GLEE.
