Topic to Locate Places with the Help of Coordinates

LESSON PLAN

You may use the below template to design learning experiences mapped with cross – curricular areas and other core skills.

Name :Mrs. Riti Grover
School: GMPS
Role: Assistant Teacher
Title of the Learning Experience: Globe: Latitudes and Longitudes
Age Group and Class: Yrs Class-11-12
Subjects Covered:
Topic of Subject 1:English
Topic of Subject 2:Math
Pre- Content (Warm up Exercise)
A model of car will be shown to the students
*Is this a real car? What is it called?
*What is model of the earth called?
*What is the shape of the globe?
*What are the shapes of continents and oceans?
*What can be located through globe?
Learning Objectives (put 3 – 4 in all)(general and specific)
*Understanding the utility of globe
* Identify latitude and longitude
*Identify the difference between latitude and longitude.
*Locate places on a grid using parallel lines/degrees of latitude and longitude
SPECIFIC
* Find on a world map the location identified by pair of map coordinates.
*will be able to understand how latitude and longitude are used to identify places on a map.
Design of Learning Experience (Lesson Planning):
Period 1 TOPIC -GLOBE
ENGAGE
The teacher will introduce lesson by initiating class discussion by asking questions mention in the pre content by showing a model of toy car and a globe. The students will be called to locate continents and oceans on the globe.
Period 2 TOPIC-LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE
EXPLANATION AND INVOLVEMENT
Topic will be introduced through drawing on the black board showing latitudes and longitudes. Students will be asked to locate these lines in the world map and globe shown to them. Latitudes and Longitudes will be explained to them. Students will be asked to observe the drawing, map and globe and compare both the lines and tell the difference between them.
Latitudes / Longitudes
Horizontal lines / Vertical lines
Runs from west to east / Runs from north to south
Form circles / Form semi circles
The students will be assessed on the basis of their response to their observation.
Period 3 TOPIC-LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE
EXPLANATION AND INVOLVEMENT
Topic will be introduced through drawing diagram showing important latitudes and longitudes. A video will be shown showing how latitudes affect the temperature and climate of a place. The video will be paused and explanation will be given wherever necessary .After the video is over students will be asked some questions like.
*Name the heat zones with their degrees.
*What factors affect the distribution of solar radiation on the earth?
*Which heat zone is very hot and why?
*Which heat zone is very cold and why?
*Name at least five each countries that are situated in these heat zones with the help of atlas.
Period 4 TOPIC- TO Locate Places On A Grid Using Parallel Lines/Degrees Of Latitude And Longitude
ACTIVITY –TO LOCATE COUNTRIES WITH THE HELP OF GIVEN MAP COORDINATES.
Students with the help of diagram on the black board and roller chart of map will be explained how to locate countries with the help of coordinates. Students will be given concept based activity to do in the class.
(Activity attached)
The students will be assessed on the basis of the response done on the concept based worksheet given to them.
Period 5(Subject 1)TOPIC- UNDERSTANDING TIME ZONE
EXPLORE AND APPLY
The topic will be introduced through video on understanding time zone .The students then will be explained the formulae to measure the time between any two places on the earth .The students will be asked to find out the time difference between countries like India and England, India and Japan so on.
Formulae explanation-The earth rotates 360 degree in about 24 hours, which means 15 degree an hour or 1 degree in 4 minutes, Thus when it is 12 noon at Greenwich, the time at 15 degree of Greenwich will be 15*4=60 minutes i.e. 1 hr. ahead of Greenwich time which means 1p.m. But at 15 degree west of Greenwich, the time will be behind Greenwich time by one hour.
The students will be assessed on the basis of their application of formulae when applied with the given problem to solve.
Period6 (Subject 2)
ENGLISH-vocabulary
Latitude, Longitude, Equator, Prime Meridian
MATH-Understand and apply appropriate techniques and formulas to determine measurements of distance between two places
Core Skills linked with the Learning Experience (tick the most appropriate one, maximum three)
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Student Leadership and Personal Development

Creativity and Imagination Citizenship
Communication and collaboration Digital Literacy
How will you assess the learning ?(Teacher’s Resources / activities conducted)attach annexure
The questions will be asked side by side during the teaching and assignment questions will be done with them to assess the learning
Tips for Lessons Preparation :
This lesson can be done through drawings on the blackboard; flashcard or even the picture chart can be used to show.
