Topic: Thirteen Colonies

Grade Level: Intermediate

Objectives: Students will explore the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies through the use of United Streaming Videos.

Materials:

·  United Streaming Account (subscription needed) and download the following titles:

o  Making the Thirteen Colonies: New England Colonies

o  Making the Thirteen Colonies: Middle Colonies

o  Making the Thirteen Colonies: Southern Colonies

·  PowerPoint software

·  Books on the Colonies

·  Student handout

Technology Skills:

·  Basic knowledge of PowerPoint

·  Scan images (optional)

·  Insert images into presentation

·  Copy and paste images from the Internet

·  Change backgrounds and fonts

Procedure:

·  Students will view the United Streaming videos and conduct additional research on their colonies using the books pulled for this unit and the Internet resources located on the project resource page.

·  Students will answer the key questions about their colony that are listed on the student work packet.

·  Once the students have completed the student handout, they will use the information gathered to complete a PowerPoint presentation that contains a title page, copyright page, and pages for each of the questions on the student answer sheet.

Student Handout

As an expert on your assigned colony, you will create a webpage that addresses the following questions:

1. Name of the Colony

2. Date Founded

3. Who was the founder of the colony?

4. What were the economic characteristics of the colony? (How did they make money?)

5. What was the predominant religion?

6. What Government was established in the colony? (Describe how the government worked)

7. Why did the founders leave Europe to find the colony? (What was so appealing that people made the journey from England to the colony?)

Your presentation should reflect the colony in the following ways:

·  All of the key ideas are covered.

·  The information must be accurate and all words should be spelled correctly.

·  At least ten visuals should accompany the written aspects; these may be from the computer or drawn by hand (scanned).

·  It should be neat, colorful, and visually appealing.
