Today's Student ~ Tomorrow's Teacher (TSTT)

2008 Program Application

PROGRAM INFORMATION SHEET

TSTT Mission

Inspire, support and prepare high school students from traditionally underrepresented communities to become teachers—with an emphasis on high need areas including math, science and ELL.

In 2008, TSTT will accept 20 diverse students from Seattle-area high schools to participate in a summer academy and academic-year support program designed to encourage and create opportunities for successful careers in teaching.

What Happens in TSTT?

After an initial orientation in early June, the 2008 TSTT program will begin its summer academy, Exploring Issues in Urban Education. The academy will be held at North Seattle Community College (NSCC), from 9:00 – 12:30, Monday - Friday from July x – July x, 2008. Attendance at the entire academy is required for participation in the TSTT program. Daily transportation assistance to NSCC will be provided.

The academy includes preparation for a hands-on teaching experience in the environmental sciences through our partnership with The Homewaters Project - an innovative environmental education organization.

The academy also includes a daily seminar to study pressing issues in urban education. Students will read articles, hear from guest speakers, take field trips in the community and complete a research paper and/or oral presentation on an education issue of their choice. Students can earn .5 high school credits for their participation in the summer academy.

TSTT academic-year activities include:

  • Quarterly meetings of the TSTT group (to include: career workshops, classroom observations and a field-trip to a professional educator’s conference)
  • Monthly check-ins with a TSTT academic advisor and academic support services for students who need assistance maintaining at least a 2.0 GPA
  • Tutoring at a local school or other community-youth program (students may earn high school service credit and/or running start college credit for this activity)
  • Completing college-entry and financial aid applications (assistance provided by TSTT)
