Call for Participation

to the

Workshop of the European Project RETACDA

Reduction of Emissions in Terminal Areas (TMA) using Continuous Descent Approaches (CDA)

18th of February 2010, BarajasAirport

Madrid, Spain

You are cordially invited to the RETACDA Workshop that will be held at Aena premises in MadridBarajasAirport, on Thursday, 18th of February 2010, hosted by the RETACDA project team and the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU).

The RETACDA project was born as a result of one of the primary SESAR’s goals aiming at minimizing CO2 emissions in TMA areas under the Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE).This project is funded by the SJU.

The Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE) agreement between the European Commission and the FAA is a programme which aims to reduce CO2 emissions and accelerate the pace of change by taking advantage of air traffic management best practices and new technologies, it expects to accelerate the implementation of environmentally friendly procedures for all phases of flight, and to validate the benefits of these improvements. The SESAR Joint Undertaking is responsible for the management of AIRE from a European perspective.
  • Enhancing the ATM system presents the potential to reduce CO2 emission by up to 10%.
  • Enhancing the ATM system will also yield other environmental upsides such as reduced noise in neighbouring areas of airports.
  • Focusing on environmental effectiveness will also result in enhancing the general service level of air transportation for passengers (such as lower cost, better punctuality and higher safety standards).

Within this framework the RETACDA project’s objective is to perform Integrated Flight Trials and Demonstrations in Terminal Area (TMA) using Continuous Descent Approaches (CDA), with the aim of reduction of CO2 emission and optimization of the fuel consumption in several or all possible segments.

More than 800 flight demonstrationshave been performedduringsummer 2009 in the Madrid-BarajasTerminal Area. The data collected for the environmental analyses were obtained from the A320 family and A340 Iberia commercial fleet.

This Workshop speciallybrings the opportunity to receive a very valuable feedback from all the communities involved in this project as well as those communities that are not only involved in RETACDA, but who play a key role as users in the long term implementation of CDA approaches.

The RETACDA partners and the SJU are looking forward to your participation in this important event and to seeing you in Madrid, convinced that it will be an opportunity for beneficial exchanges.

Yours faithfully,

RETACDA team
