JOB CONTEXT / The Commercial Services Department aims to provide a full range of support services in Catering, Bars and Hospitality Services, Conference and Event Services, Accommodation Services, Childcare Services and Reprographic Services for staff, students, visitors, businesses and community partners.
The departments’ main aim is to ensure a high standard of provision is provided to all customer groups so that the Institute is reflected positively and professionally at all times, whilst also maximising the income generating potential available.

JOB PURPOSE

To provide a quality and effective bar service to all customers. Toprovide assistance with the bar service operations in order to maximise income generating potential and customer satisfaction.

  1. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES/ KEY RESULT AREAS

A1.Quality of work

  • To carry out basic cellar work and to ensure stock is securely stored at all times
  • To make sure that the bar and storage areas are clean and tidy and that seating areas are well presented and tidy during opening hours
  • To make sure drinks/ products are prepared and served promptly to meet customer demand
  • To make sure stock control, service and storage methods avoid wastage and keep costs to a minimum
  • To help prepare/ display counters and bar areas in a way which will encourage customers to buy and enjoy their drinks
  • To operate the tills in accordance with the till and cash handling procedures, be responsible for receiving payment for goods and to ensure the safe handling and security of cash received from the bar.
  • To ensure customers are dealt with efficiently to avoid queues.

A2.Customer Satisfaction

  • To be polite and friendly at all times
  • To give customers information about products and goods
  • To deal with individual customer requests and to be helpful when dealing with customer comment.

A3.Sales

  • To advise colleagues and customers to help them choose what they would like to purchase.
  • To make the most of sales opportunities by encouraging the customer to buy something new /additional/ larger etc.
  • To make sure the counters and bar display tops are clean and attractive and well stocked at all times.
  • To take an active part in any unit sales promotions and make your own suggestions to help increase sales.
  • To give information that might lead to new business or improve customer satisfaction and to participate in customer service reviews and team meetings.

A4.Health, Safety and Hygiene.

  • To ensure that all Health and Safety, COSHH and Hygiene Regulations are adhered to.
  • To work in conjunction with the licensees and ensure all licensing laws are up-held.
  • To make sure you meet the company requirement for fire, safety, health and hygiene.
  • To work with the Bar manager / Bar supervisors to ensure that the bars operate within Trading Standards legislation
  • To look out for problems with safety or hygiene and report them to the Bar Manager / Bar supervisors
  • To wear the appropriate protective clothing for carrying out duties as provided by the University.

A5.Flexibility/Initiative/Teamwork

  • To be prepared to help out doing other duties within the department as requested by the Bar Manager / Bar supervisor/ Front of House Manager.
  • To contribute to ideas or ways of improving the bar services which will increase customer satisfaction and profitability.
  • To be prepared to undertake work, given prior notice, in order to assist with out-of hour events/ functions/ conferences etc.
  • To be polite, pleasant and friendly with colleagues and to be prepared to assist the team in a positive and willing manner.
  • To show respect and consideration when dealing with other members of staff and lead by example.

A6.Equipment/ Cleaning

  • To undertake general cleaning duties of all areas in the department as required, paying particular attention to the bar area, bar pumps, shelving, fridges, stockrooms and wash rooms.
  • To ensure that all equipment is used in a safe and proper manner and report any faults to the Bar Manager / Bar supervisor/ Front of House manager.
  • To ensure all cleaning schedules are maintained to the required level and that cleaning work is recorded accordingly.
  • Remove bins and refuse from the bar and designated areas, ensuring all such vestibules are thoroughly cleaned and correctly stored when out of use.
  • To ensure that all end of shift duties are completed before leaving the premises.

A7Timekeeping and Attendance

  • To come to work regularly and arrive to work on time.
  • To be in position for service promptly as per the agreed working rota.
  • Follow University procedures for the reporting of absence and to maintain regular contact with the Bar Managerregarding the return to work.

A8.Additional Duties

  • To undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Venue Manager or Bar Manager/ Bar supervisor

B.PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

B1.Maintain an appropriate awareness of the policies and procedures of the University.

B2.Effectively work within the policies and procedures of the University and the Student Guildand participate in appropriate processes, e.g. Appraisal, Continuing Professional Development, etc.

B3.Maintain a level of general housekeeping to the required standards of the University.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Experience:-

Recent experience of working with the public in a customer focused environment or catering, bar and hospitality environment is desirable but not essential as training will be given.

Knowledge:-

Knowledge of relevant Licensing legislation is desirable

Knowledge of Health and Safety at work is desirable

Skills and ability:-

Good interpersonal and social skills

The ability to offer a high customer service

The ability to work using your own initiative and as a member of a team

The ability to work effectively under pressure

The ability to gain and maintain respect of work colleagues
