Film 110 • Journal Writing Assignment Name______
Journal will entail writing assignments including reactions, interpretations and analysis of films or excerpts from films screened in class. Journal assignments may also include topics related to social context and film form.
Unless otherwise specified in an individual assignment, journals will be double-spaced, typed, 12 point font such as Times New Roman, Courier or Arial.
Please include the title, director, country, movement (if appropriate), date screened.
I expect journals to be edited, proofread, free from spelling and typographical errors, and grammatically sound.
When appropriate you may write in the first person but steer clear of “I like it…,” “I hated it…” type of entries. Journal assignments are designed to provoke critical thought about films screened in class and the context in which they were created, the themes the works investigate, or the possibilities opened up for narrative and other forms of film/video communication by innovation.
Journals will be collected three times throughout the course of the semester. Most likely they will be due on the same day as exams.
Each batch of journals will be worth 10 points.
It is expected that you put work into journal entries as this is a learning tool for you.
When grading your journals, I will be looking for the following:
•Thoroughness (did you do the assignment completely),
•Depth of thought (did you reflect upon the assignment and use critical thinking skills)
•Grammar and spelling (is assignment proofread, spell checked, and written in paragraph form)
•Overall quality of work (did you put effort into your work, regardless of assignment or did you try to glide by? Did you do all the assignments?)
I reserve the right to adjust journal requirements based on course calendar and needs of the class.
Use this template to keep track of journal assignments.
