JANUARY UPDATE
FAO Head Teacher/ DPH Award Lead
B&NES Food Forum are committed to ensuring schools are ready for the implementation of the School Food Plan by September 2014 and so each month we will be sending schools a monthly update. Please find attached our latest implementation timeline, where you will find activities and special lunchtime events to become involved in and support available for schools between now and September.
Cooking Becoming Part of the Curriculum – are you ready?
From September Cooking is becoming a compulsory part of the curriculum for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, read more about the curriculum online at the Design and Technology Association. We are currently trying to map facilities schools have and identify schools requiring specific support. We would appreciate a few minutes of your time in answering a few questions by completing the following online questionnaire
Universal Free School Meals Funding
Schools would have received a letter from the Minister of State for Schools detailing how revenue funding for universal free school meals will be allocated in 2014-15. After discussion with schools, caterers and local authorities, it has been decided that the fairest approach is to allocate schools a flat rate of £2.30 per meal taken, based on actual take-up by newly eligible infant pupils, which will be measured in the Schools Census from next year.
Super Soup Day –Wednesday 29th January– Thank you to those schools taking part in Super Soup Day. This special reduced price menu is a great opportunity to increase school meal numbers and try out a new approach within school dining halls. We welcome your feedback from these special days.
Book your Individual School Food Plan Meetings!
We have had successful meetings with some of our schools across B&NES, focusing on how schools can prepare and what changes need to be made for the impact of universal free school meals and ofsted inspecting the dining environment. We have many more meetings coming up over the next few months, but we recommend all schools hold individual school meetings to create a whole school approach to implementing free school meals from September. The meeting should include SMT, Cook, Kitchen Assistants, SMSA’s, B&NES Catering Service and DPH Award (Judy Allies/Claire Riggs). Contact to set a date and invite representatives along.
